    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The placement was good. I had the chance to meet lots of different teams whilst shadowing and training. Although the job role was not to my taste, i did feel that i learnt skills that will help me in later life. I enjoyed the overall experience and will be applying back after my fourth year at uni.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I was often told how well i was doing and how valued i was as a member of the team. Though i wasnt sure how integral my role was, after leaving for holiday it was obvious that i did infact deal with a large workload. there was always a good atmosphere and all colleagues worked as a team to complete a mutual goal.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Whether this is good or not... i wasnt given too much traning/guidance. My handover was relatively quick and my manager comes in to the office only once a week. I have rated this as 6, as i see it as average. personally i enjoyed being thrown into the mix and being able to work things out for myself. The help was always available if needed, but IBM are not the sort of company to hand-hold

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • This changes day to day and week to week. some days i worked to the end of the day and later, other days i had little to do. normally, mondays would start busy and by friday i would have completed most of my activities. I would prefer to be busier and sometimes do lean on the side of being slightly bored, but am happy to have a relaxed day of work at times. Put it this way, im taking my time to fill this out on a monday at 11am...

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • This is where IBM really impressed me, i was given a ton of responsibility. from day one i was able to lead calls and speak to people all over the world. by my third week i was meeting with managers to discuss new projects. throughout my time i have led multiple projects, work closely with my manager's manager and advise some managers with problems theyre having

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Not sure how much it will help my studies, though i feel the practice of work and dealing with people all around the world will definitely help me with future work/jobs. even just turning up to work at the same time and making sure i did the work i was given on time is good practice. as i said earlier, there was minimal training, so again, im not sure how much the training has helped me.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • unfortunately, very quiet and dull. IBM is massive however and has offices everywhere, i can only speak on my perspective, but i know people working in the Southbank offices will be rating this as a 9/10. I was given the option of traveling and working almost anywhere, so i cant moan, but for ease i traveled to the location closest.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • i believe it was very clean and easy. there were no problems that i can think of. IBM had 3 and 6 month reviews that were ok. i felt they could have been slightly more beneficial, but they were used to identify any problems and luckily i didn't see any problems in my role or with anyone i worked with.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I feel my manager often focused not only what i was doing in my job role, but also what i was doing in terms of shadowing, external and internal additional opportunists. I met with lots of our teams around the UK whilst taking time out to go back to my university to run assessment center activities etc.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • National Travel

    Working from home

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • In passing i have been offered the opportunity to stay, i wasnt too sure if the offer was a joke or not, but it seemed very genuine. I have also been asked to extend my time at IBM before i go back to uni, which i have done, again i was asked to stay for as long as possible. There is definitely a good chance for my to come back, though i cant rate 10/10 as there is no "got a job with them" just yet. I would be more than happy to come back, but hopefully in another role.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • unfortunately, to go with the dull environment, there wasn't much of a student feel to the place. i worked with a student and knew a few that worked in the office, but we never met up, there was never a check on how we were bonding and very little encouragement for us to work together on anything. expect the same random old person in a suit coughing, not music and parties. Again, this is for my office, and i know this to be different in other offfices.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • wouldnt know, we never socialised - i joke. Not too bad, somewhere between up north and London. - i dont think anyone would call the drinks in the clubs cheap and its far more expensive than up north, but at least youre not paying london fees for everything. the area is quite posh and the prices do seem to reflect this in most cases.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • "What Nightlife?" is right. Havent been out to town for months, house parties is the only way to go. some of the clubs are ok/below average, but for someone who has been to the limited places in our area multiple times each, they do get boring quick. unless its a 21st we wont be going out. the bars are ok, but i dont really class those as nightlife - go back to uni to have a night out, or host a house party, both are better and cheaper.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • no. id love to elaborate, but simply no. there was the odd after work meal, but that has only happened twice since ive been here. i would have liked for there to be more focus on sports, as i was looking forward to joining the basketball and football team before starting, only to find there isnt one. There is a camera club, but thats not really what im into
