    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I enjoyed my work placement as it gave me insight into a large business; how it is setup, ran and how different departments come together to make a success.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I am always thanked for the work I do and recognised for the effort and extra hours I put in.

    4/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I have been given great support, advice and guidance over the time I have been at IBM, which has helped me to make my work better.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Extremely busy at times but I prefer to be busy than bored.

    2/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I have been given a lot of responsibility during my placement, especially as a member of the core team for a global innovation tournament.

    5/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The skills I have learned this year will be invaluable when I progress in my career. I have learned not only new skills in the workplace e.g. on Excel etc but also organisation skills, how to manage my workload and how to remain calm when there is a lot to do in a short period of time.

    5/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • There were around 30 interns in the office and generally permanent workers around too. It was a nice atmosphere in that because the office isn't too large, you get to know everyone around the place, e.g. in the canteen and on reception etc. However, with the business encouraging more and more people to work from home or remotely, there were days where the office was very quiet - which is nice if you have a lot to do that day but also not great if you want to stop and have a quick chat.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The placement scheme is very well set up at IBM. The communication with IBM before I started was good, with Facebook pages set up to meet people, a 2 day induction including going out on the Thursday evening so you meet people easily and then a great handover period with the previous intern so that you got to know your role well and could ask questions before they left.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • There are lots of opportunities to do extra training and development at IBM. For example, helping to run assessment centres, lunch & learns, Think40, Giveback and lots more.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Financial Bonus

    Working from home

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • The IBM graduate scheme is very competitive but as a current intern you are supported in your application back as a Graduate. There are Career Days, calls and lots of information about how to apply back as a graduate.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Everyone at the office got on well together and over the year there were a few nights out / parties which was nice in order to get to know colleagues outside of work.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Being just outside London, the cost of living is high, as is the cost of socialising. However IBM ensure that this is taken into consideration and pay London weighting to the employees in and around London.

    2/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • As Bedfont Lakes is set out of town on an office park, there isn't much of a nightlife around the immediate area. Nightlife tends to be around Richmond, Clapham and Central London.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes there are lots of activities to get involved with outside of work, such as Giveback, Volunteering, Think40, Assessment Centres and more.

    3/5
