The Role
I loved my placement as I had the opportunity to not only do things that my job requires but take challenges that I am interested in and would help me develop my own skills and capabilities! IBM is a great company mostly because it is a place that provides countless opportunities - if there is something you want to do or see - just ask!
I feel like I have an amazing team, they provide me with feedback all the time! I have never felt more appreciated that since I started working for IBM. I know that my work is important and it matters and I know that they see me as a highly important member of their team.
Since I joined my team my task manager Katarina Noen has been the most supportive manager one can help for. Amongst the vast amount of things she did for me was assigning me a mentor, Emma James, who is simply brilliant at what she does. I have had help not only with my day to day duties and challenges but also with deciding what I would like to do in future. Both my task manager and my mentor have shown a great interest in my personal development!
As much as I want to be - and that is A LOT! I love what I do and I like to keep myself busy and constantly learn. I know that IBM offers support for people who feel they have too much to do and help take some of that work. However, I personally believe there is no such thing as too much to do as long as you enjoy doing it! Also there have been times when I haven't had that much on my plate, and that is when I ask different people at my company that I found interesting to lend them a hand - the best thing one can do at a placement. Not many people will refuse help and you will get to do something different or something you truly find interesting, something you can learn from!!!
In the beginning I was given small tasks, things that I can learn from and it gradually became more and more. Now my manager has asked me to step up and work on more creative and important projects!
I have learned more from this year than from both years at university together!
The Company
Unfortunately, my team is spread across Europe so most of the time I was talking to them through the phone or online meetings. However, the good side was that I get to travel across Europe a lot. As for the atmosphere the team is enthusiastic and always nice to me!
Well organized, everything was well explained and I have support if I ever have any questions. IBM has a whole placement scheme in place, therefore they take care of everything, organize events, even have social groups etc... I cannot imagine a better orginized placement scheme! There is volunteering, shadowing and much more!!
A lot, there are a lot of opportunities that IBM offers to help us develop! There was a mandatory training at the beginning, then different workshops you can choose from such as Effective Communications, Fearless etc. In additional IBM has many portals where you can search for all kinds of trainings, some virtual, some in class etc..

Working from home
IBM will definitely be one of the places I will consider working for after I graduate! My manager has also asked me if I would like to work next year part time, which although is still uncertain just shows that if you are hardworking and passionate about what you do, managers in IBM will notice, appreciate and reward you for it.
The Culture
It was great for other placement students, however, perhaps because of the fact that my team is spread across Europe or because I am not as sociable as other people I didn't get to participate as much. However, the placement students have something like online newsletter with fin games, snapchats, couples matching, so for other people it was truly great!
I live in central London, so a lot, however IBM offers placements all over UK. Still I was able to afford a lot of great things with the salary they are paying me! However, I can also choose to live in any other plays which would mean I can afford even more.
Central London - you guess! There are many clubs and pubs everywhere. In the begining every Thursday the placement students were gathering at the pub in front of IBM and some of them were going to Walkabout which is right across the river. It is dangerous though as it is on a Thursday! :D
Yes, as explained above - countless! Networking is the key as you get to meet so many people, you can always ask them if you can help. You also have so many events you can volunteer for, for example with IBM I became a STEM Ambassador and had the opportunity to work with small kids and help them build a robot. At the end there was a competition between the different schools in London and it was one of the best things i have done!
