The Role
I really enjoy my placement so far, I got a small but really nice UKI team. People here in IBM are friendly and everyone is willing to help. Managers they not only care about your professional performance but also your development as a person. I am given a lot of responsibility and opportunities throughout the year and I really appreciate that!
My colleagues absolutely value what I contribute to the team. They did not treat me different just because I am an intern. Instead, they trust me with my work just like normal employees and my work has been regularly recognized by them, which really boost my confidence and make myself feel valued.
My manager is the best manager I ever have among my internship experience. Not even one of! He really cares about my personal development, e.g., do I feel good in the office, is it easy to find a seat, any questions are welcome to ask etc. It is these details that make me feel really comfortable with the job and I know that there is always someone I can turn to when I have questions and this is fantastic.
As in intern in IBM, you can never feel bored. My job is not based on routine work, so sometimes could be busy when stakeholder have multiple requirements and sometimes could be chilled. But there are just so many opportunities to explore in this corporations, you can do giveback, volunteering and even shadow others' job if you finish your job early. So you will never feel bored as long as you seize the opportunities.
For a university student intern, I am actually astonished about how much responsibility I have been given. I am involved in multiple projects, which is later used by some really senior managers and on the third month of my internship, I am responsible to create a 30-page deck on financial market research for a VP, which is huge for me. I would say when IBM hires you, they trust you with you capability and they are not afraid or unwilling to delegate responsibility to you, just depends on how you can seize it.
It will definitely help a lot in my future degree or career. The skills you will learn here is transferable, which means you can use it when you need it, under any circumstances. I personally upgrade my skills of analysis, presentation, communication and so on. I am sure this can help you in all the ways for life.
The Company
Since it is big corporation, the office is definitely a mix of everything. From VP to senior manager to interns, we all sit together regardless of the band. It is a corporation that really emphasize on teamwork, so you can always see people sitting around talking on their projects, which is a great atmosphere since you feel involved. Especially in the SouthBank office, as an intern, we have our community and sitting with interns is never dull, but you should finish your job first ;)
It is actually well organized and structured. Before we got into the office, you will get an email from some interns working there asking if you have any questions, which is great because you can get some first-hand information. Once you start the job, you will have a two-day induction and training session in Portsmouth, where you will be taken very good care of. Also, throughout the year, the foundation community will arrange so many events or training that can help you to get into the jobs. All in all, I will say it is a pretty decent community!
I am really grateful about what I have got from the company. My manager tries his best to get me into as many training session as he can and I got a fantastic chance to go to Orlando, USA to attend a global team meeting for 3 days, which really blew me away. Not only about what I have learned in US, but also about how the corporation is willing to invest you, and this is what I love about IBM.

Under nowadays economic situation, it will be a lie if I say everyone can come back as a graduate. But spending one year in the IBM definitely give you more chances and advantages when you apply back. You will have chances to shadow others' jobs so when you apply, you will know which one interest you the most rather than panic about the job.
The Culture
Absolutely. We have over 300 placement students in IBM and it is a very big community. We have after-work drink every thursday for the first three months. And once you formed your group zone, you can plan whatever you want to do! Also we will have two big Parties - Christmas and June parties and it was a blast! That's no doubt the social life here is fantastic
I will give it a five, since it is in London. So it would not be cheap, but you got decent pay with 1500 pounds a month, you can have a really good life in London and still got some money left!
I work in the southbank office, which is based in Waterloo, London. Night Life here is crazy, you can walk along the River Thames, London Eyes and Big Ben just there. The view is fantastic and there are loads of bars and clubs around, I am sure you will have a good time.
Definitely. Volunteering, Giveback, social and sports clubs. There are so many opporunities, as long as you want it.
