The Role
I absolutely loved my internship. Everyone in my team was really friendly and my manager made sure I had lots of opportunities to be involved in different things. I really enjoyed the work I was doing and I felt like I was fully part of the team.
My team mates were brilliant. They were all very welcoming and open to working with me. They were always happy to explain things to me and answer my questions. They were also very quick to give me positive feedback - for example when I presented to the team, and it made me feel not only as though the work I was doing was truly worthwhile, but that they actually appreciated it.
My manager was excellent - we worked closely on a number of different projects, but he always gave me space to use my brain and take responsibility. We met for an hour every week to catch up, which was an opportunity to talk about the work I was doing, what needed doing and what I wanted to do. Then we would talk about my personal developments and how I was getting on with meeting my objectives. This was also a chance to feedback to each other on how we felt things were going. He also helped me look for, prepare for and secure a job. He was very good at pushing me just slightly out of my comfort zone in a non-threatening way, which has really helped my confidence.
I was really busy during this internship - because I wanted to be. There was lots of flexibility over the work I was doing and I was free to be as involved as I wanted to be. I was very keen to get stuck in and learn as much as possible, so I did! I had lots of things to do, but that's how I work best and it never felt like anything I couldn't handle. My manager was also careful to make sure I wasn't constantly doing 'intern' type tasks, which meant I could be busy with varied and interesting things.
I felt very trusted by my manager and he was very good at delegating tasks to me and letting me take full responsibility for them. Again, I felt like I could have as much or as little responsibility as I was comfortable with and he was always there to support me if I needed it. This also really helped my confidence and made me feel like I was genuinely contributing usefully to the team.
I have learnt so much from this internship - from transferable skills like presenting, influencing others and problem solving, to the more technical side of digital i.e. using a CMS and Google Analytics, I had no experience in the digital field before starting, only an interest and this internship has set me up to launch a career in this field. The experience has been totally invaluable.
The Company
Very friendly and jokey - everyone was nice to me and nice to each other and up for a laugh. There were lots of opportunities to socialise and people were constantly buying sweets and snacks to share with the rest of the team. Everyone was friendly and supportive to each other, and we had short meetings twice a week which was a chance to feedback to everyone what you're up to, and everyone was always attentive and interested. The team were also very open to my constant fundraising efforts!
Absolutely seamless - from applying to this last week, I have always known what I needed to do next and I have felt totally supported, both by my manager and the general intern manager. There is lots of focus placed on personal development and whenever I had a question, one these people were able and happy to help. Nothing was stressful and I didn't feel like I ever had to jump through hoops.
As I've already mentioned, there was a huge focus on personal development throughout the internship - far more, in fact, than I anticipated! Overall, there was a very clear structure in place for personal development and then my manager was really on board with helping me with that.

I have managed to get a job within my team when the internship finished and I am so happy and excited! This internship has set me on my way in terms of developing the technical skills I need to pursue a career in the digital field and they have taken me on on the basis that they can teach me what I don't already know. I am absolutely thrilled to be staying with CRUK and with my team!
The Culture
Yes on both counts - my team mates organise a lot of social events and I was invited from the beginning. Then, the intern manager also ensured that there was lots of opportunities for all of the interns to get to know each other and hang out, which as we got to know each other better we were able to take over. We had a lot of fun!
Cost of socialising in the area could vary pretty wildly - but luckily lots of my colleagues and the intern manager knew about happy hours/reasonably priced places/places that gave us discount etc. So while it wasn't cheap, it was certainly cheaper than I expected and going out was definitely affordable.
There were absolutely loads of places to go and eat and drink - the interns would regularly go out for drinks to a few different places on a Thursday and there would normally be something to do with my team mates on a Friday! There are places were you can sit and have a quiet drink and places where you can go and have a not so quiet drink. I loved it!
Absolutely - as well as the more obviously social side of things i.e. dinner and drinks, there were loads of opportunities to volunteer at different events and fundraisers the charity was hosting. There were also sports-based opportunities for those that wanted them!!
