The Role
I did enjoy my 12 months at UBS. It was good fun, I learnt a lot and made a lot of friends.
Some social activities, but not overly. I got on well with other interns rather than full time employees.
They left you to yourself once you were trained. Intense at the start but eased off once you had a workload.
I had a decent balance. I had a few jobs I had to do every day which kept me busy and then I took on some extra projects which weren't under time pressure so I was always working hard.
A lot of responsibility. UBS want you to look at the processes as an outsider and make positive changes if possible. I ran my processes and was left to control them.
My placement probably won't help me too much in my degree. But it was really insightful and I learned a lot about hedge funds and banking. I thought it was a great year and I'm so glad I did it.
The Company
The atmosphere was very good. My colleagues were very nice and we all got on well. By the end of the year I felt quite close to some of them. Everyone was friendly and chatted to everyone. You could get up and chat to anyone on your floor about anything without getting any dirty looks. So long as you got your work done, there was no issues.
Not great to be honest, but that was partly my fault as I started one month later than the rest of the interns. I missed all the inductions, but it meant I had to get personalised one on one training which was quite good. Not much organised throughout the year for the interns socially or for learning/training.
I did get a lot of training when I first joined which was good. However, once they felt I was trained to do my job, there wasn't much extra training put on for me. I had to go out and find it myself, and ask for it. Overall I would rate it as average.
Not good. I was basically told half way through my placement there was a hiring freeze in my department and that I wouldn't be offered a job. This is in spite of the fact that they said I had done great work and they would like to offer me something.
The Culture
It was good. I made some great friends from all over Europe. They seem to take on interns who can socialise and make friends. It isn't very structured and they expect the interns to organise themselves to have fun. This worked quite well on the most part, however, some interns lived at home which meant they weren't keen for many activities.
I stayed in the same student flat I lived in the previous year, so I had quite a good deal as it was cheaper than all the other interns and only a 15 minute walk to work. I was very lucky and will be saving a bit of money during this year for my summer travel plans and final year of university.
Nightlife is good in central London. As my university is in London, I already knew many of the best places to go. It is quite expensive to go out in central London. I didn't go out clubbing that much as I have lived in London for the last few years.
They had quite a few initiatives, from social sport, to cooking lessons and charitable work. the interns were expected to get involved and there were many opportunities. I would rate this quite high, at around 7/10. I played sport, went out for dinner and took part in quizzes through work at UBS.
