About You
To a great extent. It was very insightful covering all decisions within the investment bank from back office roles such as legal and compliance all the way to front office roles in both public and private spheres.
All the employees took their time to answer our questions whether technical or very basic. UBS were also very generous in how they supported students from outer London who wished to attend the spring week by providing a hotel for them to stay during the duration of the insight programme.
Each intern in the spring week programme was given the chance to work shadow an employee. This gave us one-one time where we could really delve deeper and ask key questions about an area we had an interest. The employees definitely gave us guidance and advice throughout, giving us tips to improve our applications and understanding.
The spring week made it clear that people from all fields of study are welcome. It encouraged us to think critically about what a bank does and the varying roles within it. I now have a greater knowledge of the key skills I'd need to thrive in the industry and how to use my degree to an advantage.
The Company
Fantastically structured. Everything was very well organised and we were continuously kept busy. Throughout the week we engaged in several different workshops, presentations and opportunities to network.
It was a very welcoming atmosphere. The social on day one enabled us interns to meet each other. As the week progressed we met employees from all fields who seemed friendly and interested in hearing form us. Interactive workshops and presentations made the day more enjoyable.
The work shadowing scheme gave us a chance to learn about a field we were interested in in more detail. Thus we developed a greater knowledge of this area. However as it is only an insight programme they couldn't do that much,
The spring week definitely gave us a glimpse of working life. Whether it be through the hours we worked or the tasks we undertook, I feel we gained a better understanding of what it's like to work at an investment bank. However as we are unqualified we could never do proper work.
UBS gave us a presentation on their culture and values often using examples to explain further. Their culture was further reiterated through the voice and action of their employees who constantly referred to these values throughout the week,
I think the information provided by all departments was very insightful. They all managed to make their divisions sound really interesting which actually made it harder to make a decision. However I now have a greater clarity of what roles I have a preference for.
Everything Else
They paid for my accommodation.
Yes we had a networking lunch with employees from several divisions. We also had the chance to work shadow an employee and talk to employees after their presentations.
We networked over lunch. This had its drawbacks as it is difficult to eat and talk to people at the same time. However because it was lunchtime people were generally more relaxed. The social after work was a great chance to meet other interns and relax after a long day at work.
Yes. UBS are very active in their voluntary work. They mentor children in a school not far from their offices and take part in sporting events to fundraise for them too.
Yes. It's a great way to learn about an investment bank and the different jobs within it. It's also a great way to meet people from different universities and courses. Lastly it's a great way to head-start a career in banking.
