The Role
The guys in my team were a good laugh but the work was mind-numbingly tedious.
Mixed feelings. I felt as if my efforts were really appreciated and while some people were really helpful/friendly I was a bit disappointed in my mentor and line manager who could have done much more to make me feel included.
I was given very little in the way of advice by management throughout the internship and they were very poor at providing feedback on how I was doing.
Very much extremes. For most of the internship there was hardly any work to do and then in the last week I racked up about 70 hours and was in the office until 3am.
I helped to draft sections of client reports and I was able to sit in on conference calls with clients and goto meetings etc.
It taught me a lot about the importance of getting on with work colleagues and producing clear, accurate work.
The Company
I was in a great team but most of them were so snowed under with work most of the time so it wasn't really a barrel of laughs.
Initial training was poor, the company organised no social events for interns whatsoever and it would have been good to know more explicitly what was expected of me and to know how I was doing - before the end of the internship.
Very poor. Most of the initial training programme was irrelevant to the division I was working in. There was no formal, structured training programme so anything I learned was purely from on the job experience.
Subsidised Canteen
Overall, I don't think I was a great match for KPMG and especially the specific division I was working in. I've now got a job working in finance for a British based investment bank and already feel much much happier with this organisation!
The Culture
Nothing was organised for us by KPMG. We sorted out meals, drinks etc amongst ourselves but overall I think the social scene was poor compared to other Big 4 firms and investment banks.
