About You
The entire week was undoubtedly fantastic, and exceeded my expectations. All the presenters introducing the Spring Interns to the business were very senior -which speaks volumes about the supportive, non-hierarchical culture across JP proving time and again all the things you see on the careers website. Each day was structured with the appropriate number and length of breaks, and most if not all of my long and insightful days culminated in a high-end social somewhere in the concrete jungle of the Wharf -courtesy of JP.
I personally felt that quality -in all aspects- was never compromised on the grounds that we were 'just interns' -something that a bank other than JP would have played on. Extroverted and introverted alike got the same amount of attention throughout the week from HR to business reps to support staff everyone was in the best of moods and was genuinely happy to help.
Agreed - the type of group work we got was very niche and involved a lot of quick learning, focus and putting yourself out there for the purpose of heightening your own skills. It was by no means something you could just "wing". But of course, a lot of the type of students that are selected for the Spring with JP Morgan thrive in these sorts of situations. Each subgroup got more than one mentor and personal attention was at a ratio of 3:1, 2:1 for help on the group work, and work shadowing lasted several hours to give you the opportunity to make a lasting impression.
These were essentially life skills I learned. A leading training company came in for several hours and really built-up and solidified my presentation and communication skills. Something that I have been trying to work on myself for university, the industry and beyond. Secondly, hard skills were also honed during the week as well leaving me more confident and prepared for interviews.
The Company
Undoubtedly seamless. The timetable was adhered to from the first to the last day and everything on the schedule was covered. This may seem abstract and 'a given' if you have not attended a separate insight programme with a competing bank but there can be cases where a lack of organisation leads to skipping out entire 2 hour sessions from a pre-scheduled timetable. This was -not- the case for the J.P. Morgan Spring Week. Also, enough time was left to travel inbetween their London offices.
Contrary to popular belief -from the world of Film-, I never felt like 'just an intern' and I never went around getting coffee's. If the industry is something you are genuinely passionate about -beyond the wording you use in your applications- it will shine through in work-shadowing, presentations, Q&A and networking. And if you are passionate about something, spending hours trying to learn and digest it will be fun and not dull. The Spring with JP has left me reassured about the Financial Industry. Enough Said.
A leading training company came in for several hours on two occasions for this. This was obviously a large investment to make. I also got a couple of hard-copy sheets I could take away/write on to consolidate further on anything I learned during this time. The external staff were also engaging.
Had two work shadowing sessions within both separate departments under the Asset Management arm so could clearly get a feel of where I felt most comfortable. The shadowing lasted several hours, and I met a lot of people all over the floor in both departments, also introduced to people on the private side -in the bubble.
After speaking to atleast 30 different people through out the course of the week I was able to develop a better understanding of what it would be like to work at JP. I met people through networking, shadowing etc and adhered to the schedule as this is all included in the structure and there is no need to deviate from it.
More confident about the financial industry and JP as a firm to start my career in. HR also prepared questions to ask panelists that would have perhaps not come-up in Q&A sessions, which helped me to really decide on my path. Opportunity to interact with interns across the business was also helpful as this will essentially be the people you spend all your time with when work begins.
Everything Else
Accomodation was external and excellent, close by and really felt at home. Well fed, all day everyday. If anything, my biggest challenge would be realigning the papillae on my tounge to be able to withstand the poorly made student food I normally have. Grilled Salmon steak, Gnocci, Gourmet Sliders are some of very many things that I will miss dearly.
Several of these every day of the week.
Great!
The only reason I did not find out about this is because I never went out of my way to ask. Though I am confident that these to occur at JP -and even remember walking past a gym on one of the floors so guaranteed view of the city while on the treadmill perhaps.
Already have. Several times.
