The Role
The scheme was a perfect insight into life as a Mayer Brown trainee, and I came out with a great impression of the firm.
Everyone in my departments went out of their way to introduce themselves to me, check up on how I was getting on, ensure I had enough work to do and answer any questions I had. I found all my colleagues to be warm, friendly, and extremely welcoming.
I couldn't have wished for better supervisors! They took so much time out of their schedules to explain the background behind every piece of work I was given, even when it wasn't essential for the task. They were extremely approachable and definitely made my experience a positive one.
I never felt as though I'd run out of things to do, but didn't feel swamped either. I could always ask around for more work to do, and everyone gave me manageable deadlines to work to.
Without any legal education or training there was only a certain amount of responsibility I'd expect (and want!) to receive, but I felt that the work I completed was a valuable contribution to client work that was ongoing in my departments.
The main "skill" that I gained from my placement was an awareness of how laws are applied in commercial contexts, which I am sure will be useful during my GDL and LPC studies.
The Company
"Work hard, play hard" would definitely be a good way to describe the atmosphere!
The HR team are fantastic - everything is organised with seamless precision. The Welcome Day for accepted participants in April was a great idea, and is not widely offered by other firms. We also had a daily schedule given to us in our booklets on the first day, and email reminders for all the events and talks that were organised for us.
We attended various talks on the different departments, pro-bono work and training opportunities with the firm, as well as training/refresher sessions for current trainees. The firm also offer GDL and LPC sponsorship.

Company Parties/Events
I had a wonderful experience at Mayer Brown, and was delighted to be offered a Training Contract at the end of my placement.
The Culture
There's no shortage of opportunities to go for lunch/drinks with other people on the scheme as well as colleagues in your departments - everyone gets on really well and are happy to spend time together.
London is expensive, but the firm covered the cost of all the social events they organised.
There are various sports teams that we were encouraged to get involved with, and pro-bono opportunities for trainees (although spaces were limited for placement students).
