About You
The Spring Week was great. Very hard work which should be expected - it's a completely full on week where you're constantly learning and meeting new people.
I felt very valued. HR are great and everyone wants to meet you and give you their insight of the company. You are not 'just' an intern but are seen as very much the future of the company. They work hard to impress you and give a full insight into the company.
Loads of guidance. The week was perfectly planned out so you knew what would be happening and when.
My presentation skills improved massively because of the group project that we had and a session on how to be a better presenter. The emphasis on working hard throughout the week is also just a general help in life.
The Company
Perfectly. The structure covered all areas giving a well-rounded picture. Everyone knew what was happening and when. Nothing was a waste of time. We had very few breaks which was probably a good thing on reflection because it maximised the benefit.
The week was obviously hard work but the atmosphere was great. I feel more competition sitting in a university seminar than I did at the week. No one is out to tread on anyone else. Everyone is very impressive individually, I think this makes people respect and value each other.
JP are renowned for their investment in the people they take on. I definitely felt this during the week. They spent thousands on the week. We had 3rd party speakers in to come and help us develop we had junior analysts, MDs and many seniors come in. These people are voluntarily giving up their time to come and help you, the didn't have to.
As much as any insight could. Important to remember it's only an 'insight' and we looked at all manner of different areas and roles within them. Obviously some areas are different to others so it's quite hard to imagine exactly day to day life, but they did the best they could to tell us all about theirs. Definitely extremely hard work in all areas and now I know why bankers are paid so much.
Large emphasis on trying to show the company culture. JP is extremely friendly, almost every employee I met wanted to give their time and wasn't too busy to talk to me.
You really cannot completely understand what it's like until you get to experience it first-hand. It sounds cliché but it is so true. Speaking to actual people about how they feel and what they do is so valuable.
Everything Else
No spring insights are paid except Goldman. They had reimburse forms for travel expenses but we were all sent out travelcards for the week anyway which was great. They also provide accommodation if you live outside the M25 - apparently very nice too, an apartment in Bermondsey.
Couldn't have been more during the week. The week was constantly meeting new people all across the firm. Even a couple of the lunchtimes were networking lunches. Faultless in this regard.
They provided socials most nights - nice restaurants, pub quiz in Canary Wharf etc. Networking events were constant and also not as formal as you'd expect. A lot of chats with people from within, definitely not testing you, you really felt they were a chance for you to get to know the company.
Yes, people do do things but not loads. Everyone works so hard and so many hours and so it's slightly tricky. There is five-a-side and things like that though. I think I'd be too tired to do too much in the evenings.
Completely. I'd say that you have to realise that it's going to be full-on. There's no point it being an incomplete picture so that's good. It really is an 'insight' in every sense of the word. You will gain a complete picture of the culture, work ethic and general life in the industry and firm.
