About You
It was intense but fun, I enjoyed it. I enjoy working in the industry and really enjoyed the chance to learn. It's just 5 days and your constantly doing different things so it's impossible to get bored. Every lunch break you're doing networking which is fun/effort depending on your personality.
The firm invests a lot in their staff. The week is carefully planned, meaning you don't have much free time, but also shows you're valued. There are events in the evening, networking functions etc, The staff you network with can be quite senior and are genuinely keen to help you progress and the company is keen to find new talent.
We had mentors for the project work which we were doing in groups that spent about 4 hours with us. In general, all of the staff are keen for you to be constantly asking questions, and so the support and guidance is there so long as you ask the questions.
The information I received isn't really related to my degree subject at all so it won't has not made a jot of difference to make subject knowledge, however, the skills of working hard in a team, networking etc. will be useful throughout my degree I'm sure, You learn a lot in a short space of time, maybe not use for your degree unless you're doing finance, but the soft skills are useful for life.
The Company
There was a clear plan and structure to the week which meant that no minute was unplanned. This meant the week was very intense but also very rewarding. The timetable was well thought through, although this makes it less flexible as you don't have control over what you're doing when.
It was very friendly and cooperative. The staff genuinely want to help you and the company wants to invest in you to develop new talent. The atmosphere between interns is very friendly and I think we all want to keep in touch, hopefully we will. I also know that the staff genuinely make an effort to keep in touch and take an interest in your progress throughout your career.
The whole point of the week is for J.P.Morgan to invest in new talent to boost the future prospects of the firm. There are education sessions and a lot of money spent helping you network and a big emphasis on you asking questions to learn. they want you to ask questions, to show your interested and to help you learn.
The chance to network with lots of professionals at different levels within the firm doing very different jobs gave me a good insight into what jobs would be a fit for my personality and where I could fit into such an organisation. At such a large firm there are so many jobs that you will never have heard of that you are bound to learn more about where you fit in regardless of how much you already know.
Everything Else
Every lunch and evening, bar one, we had networking opportunities with staff from all levels of the firm which was great fun and really helped me get a sense of how the firm fits together and the culture of the firm. Networking can feel awkward at first but the staff are generally welcoming, they've volunteered to do it and you get out what you put in.
The networking events were well organised and they were clearly happy to spend money on them to make them as good as they can be. We were well fed throughout such events, and you do have to be disciplined with free alcohol! The events are good fun, everyone is friendly, just put yourself out there and you'll be fine.
