About You
It was an extremely enjoyable and informative experience. This was largely due to the welcoming and cheerful attitude of the Recruitment Team and all the staff involved in the process, as well as due to the high calibre of the spring intern cohort as a whole. The calendar of events was varied and useful, with the group project being particularly instrumental as an insight into financial advisory.
It definitely seemed as though the entire intern cohort felt very valued. The Recruitment Team made every effort to get to know everyone quite well (although it did seem that they already did know all of us already from the application process) with the 'getting to know' each other drinks event at the start of the programme meaning that the atmosphere during the rest of the week was genuinelly friendly, The other great aspect of the programme is that junior bankers were very happy to meet all of us, and spent a very large amount of time introducing us to as many of their colleagues as possible. The most striking thing, however, was how involved senior bankers were in the process. From making the time to meet us with us over afternoon tea, a large amount of them actually watched us present our findings in the group project we had been assigned for a good couple of hours. The 'time is money' maxim is almost definitely best applied to senior bankers, so the extent to which we were valued was quite evident here.
There were a lot of useful skills sessions and we were given a very hands-on introduction into the firm, although the group project itself came with relatively little guidance other than the great starting support packs. It seemed as though this was intentionally done to evaluate our competencies.
Even though the information on the work of the bank is only slightly relevant to my degree, the presentation and group work skills developed over the course of the project will be extremely useful in both my continuing academic and professional career.
The Company
Clea, well-communicated and well-organised structure.
Positive, collegiate, friendly and at the same time challenging and intellectually stimulating, a lot of which had to do with the unique historical ethos of the firm.
A number of senior bankers and well-qualified coaches were involved in providing us with an initial induction and introductory training in the core skills required in the industry.
The fact that we were assigned a project which we were able to work on throughout the week gave a good taste of the type of work the firm did. This was complimented by the shadowing sessions, which for once actually involved genuine shadowing as all the employees were busy with work during the process.
Very well. The tour of the Rothschild Archives on the first day went a long way to set the mood of the insight, with speakers constantly referring to the rich heritage of the firm. The Rothschild symbolism was to be seen everywhere if one looked closely enough, which definitely added to the prestige of the institution. More importantly, however, the collegiality of the firm was shown both through how willing analysts were to help us out and from how the spring interns needed to work well together in order to complete the group project, In addition, the volunteering day at the start of the week was clearly shown to be the product of the philanthropic spirit inherent in the Rothschild culture,
Highly valuable.
Everything Else
Yes: presentations, networking lunches and afternoon tea, and shadowing.
There was one event which was dedicated entirely to letting the interns get to know each other, which was great. The afternoon tea with the directors was particularly informative and conducted in a very British manner in a highly sophisticated setting that offered a gorgeous view of the Square Mile.
Yes. The numerous opportunities to talk to the recruitment staff and analysts enabled us to learn a lot about the day to day lives of employees at the firm.
100% yes if the friend would be a good fit culturally.
