About You
I enjoyed the insight programme to a large extent. The 2-day programme has given me the opportunity to learn about the specific functions of the various divisions of KPMG. This allows me to make a more informed decision when choosing to apply for their internship and possibly graduate programme. The atmosphere was very friendly, unlike some of the investment banks. At the same time, there was a good balance with intensity and challenge. However, the programme was a little too short to be of true value in terms of improving one's skills.
KPMG has devoted significant attention and effort in making sure the participants feel valued. There was a networking session where many of the employees who newly joined the graduate programme came to share with us their experiences. I found that really helpful because I was able to learn more about the company culture first-hand, which is not possible just by reading their website and brochures.
The support provided was sufficient to help us learn yet not excessive to hamper our learning process. The staff were very keen on sharing their experiences. During the case presentation, the employees were able to give us invaluable feedback and points of improvement which will help us to polish our presentation skills. Overall, the level of guidance and support is just nice.
The programme had a presentation skills workshop which I found particularly useful. In university and at my future workplace, giving presentations is something unavoidable. I learnt how to be more engaging and how to spice up my presentations. These are skills that will prove useful for years to come. There was also a negotiation skills workshop which again imparted me with very practical skills that I can take away after the programme.
The Company
I found the programme to be quite well-structured. On the first day, we were informed of the agenda which was very helpful in giving us an overview. The programme had a good mix of practical skill workshops and information workshops. However, one point of improvement is to probably stagger the skills workshops and information workshops so that it would be more engaging.
I love the general atmosphere, which was characterized by friendly competition and mutual growth and learning. Unlike in some of the banks, the group of people recruited by KPMG for the programme was not extremely competitive, but that doesn't mean they are not competent. The staff also played a very major role in keeping the atmosphere light-hearted and enjoyable.
I was only at KPMG for 2 days so there is quite limited opportunity for them to invest in my personal training and development. However, I can sense that the HR places a huge emphasis on employees' personal developments. They constantly emphasize the importance they place on their people, which is really heartening.
The programme gave us the opportunity to network with current staff in a very informal setting. That really helped me to connect with the staff personally and through their personal experiences, I was able to learn more about their job responsibilities and that helped me to have a better understanding of what it is like to have a full time role with KPMG.
It gave me a very good understanding of the company and how they value their staff. It is quite heartening to see that despite being such a big firm, they still value each and every of their employees. This is definitely a firm I would love to work for. The people here are amazing and is a very strong pull factor.
There were many information workshops where current employees shared with us their experiences of working in their respective divisions. The sharing sessions helped to dispel many of the myths surrounding some of the divisions, which were really helpful. The content were presented in a very personal way which makes it easier for us to digest.
Everything Else
KPMG offers 100 pounds of reimbursement in total for transport costs, which is really helpful, especially for those living outside London. The reimbursement encourages more people from outside London to participate in the programme. I don't expect to be paid for the programme, which is fine. Other than that, I am quite satisfied with this aspect of the programme.
I would definitely recommend this programme to a friend. Firstly, it is only a 2-day programme, which is way shorter than some of the other programmes. Secondly, it really offers a better understanding of what each division does within the firm. However, do not expect to benefit greatly from the skills workshops. After all, it is only a 2-day programme with a very tight schedule.
