About You
The placement was incredibly enjoyable and rewarding. The employees were very friendly and helpful, willing to give up their own time to help you with work and the commercial awareness project. During networking events the associates were particularly keen to offer advice on career paths, and my mentor [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] was especially helpful in advising me on training contracts and vacation schemes
The partners found a good balance between providing us with real work that needed to be done, and giving us time to ourselves to work on our group presentations.
Though the work was very challenging, often requiring us to 'learn on the job', there was always someone to help us with the work. However, sometimes instructions could have been a little clearer
Though interesting, a lot of the legal knowledge I gained was limited to a practical, rather than academic use. For example franchise agreements for hotel chains, or the new laws introduced following the Panama incident. However, I did get a chance to see what I had already studied put into practical use. For example contractual exemption clauses, or the TUPE Regulations.
The Company
The scheme was very well structured and organised. The ice-breaker games on the first day were a great induction to the week. We also had workshops organised for us on CV building and networking, and vacation schemes and training contracts at Taylor Wessing. Finally, we were provided with 1 hour slots to prepare for our presentation in meeting rooms throughout the week, which was very helpful
The offices of Taylor Wessing are definitely the most friendly of any city law firm that I have been to, and provide a relaxed atmosphere despite the intensity of the work. This was particularly impressive given how formally everyone was dressed, and the fact all of the men wore ties helped to retain the firm's professional outlook, despite the very friendly and relaxed atmosphere.
As the placement was only one week long, the firm was very limited in terms of what it could do to invest in the other students and myself. However, we did learn a lot from the tasks that the partners set, and the employees at Taylor Wessing were very generous with their time, in explaining what they wanted from us.
Again, as we were only there for 1 week, our insight was relatively limited. However, even in this short space of time I was able to gain a good impression of the culture of the firm. Furthermore, as the tasks that were set were things that real associates would be asked to do, we were able to gain a good impression of the sort of work that we would have to do as associates or trainees at the firm.
It was very quickly apparent that TW had a very special culture. The professionalism of the firm is apparent from the moment that you walk into their impressive building, and it was nice to see so many men wearing ties in an age where office attire is becoming increasingly informal. However, this professionalism did not hinder the friendliness of everyone at the firm, who were extremely helpful and very generous with their time.
We were allocated an adviser who was extremely helpful in talking to us about career paths, in my case taking time out of her day to talk to me about the next steps in my career. At networking events we were also given the chance to talk to associates about the steps they took in becoming solicitors, and they were again very helpful in giving advice to us.
Everything Else
I didn't expect to be paid or reimbursed
We were given several opportunities to meet partners, and a networking lunch with a large number of associates and trainees.
The events were very fun, the employees were really friendly and I was able to get a few business cards from employees as well.
We were told about the parties and social events, as well as sports teams and other activities that TW employees partake in.
This was probably the best week of work experience that I've had, and I would recommend it without hesitation to a friend
