About You
I thoroughly enjoyed the insight. Due to EY recruiting a with it seems a more personality bias, the people I spent the 2 days with were great fun and were very varied also! Often with these events people can be quite nervous and shy but everyone got involved which made the experience more informative. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to go into this industry.
Very much, we had a great opportunity to meet many people within EY to gain each of their personal opinions on working for them. We were treated to a lovely view of London Bridge with lots of delicious food also; they cared for all of us well. It was a friendlier atmosphere than I expected before arriving, which made the experience very welcoming.
A huge amount, there was in depth information as to what the tax and assurance branches of EY involve, if there was ever any questions we had they were answered honestly with no problem. There was plenty of information on the skills required for a career in EY and helpful pointers in terms of what our next steps are in EY.
I gained a lot of confidence meeting all the new people, as there was a huge variety of students from all universities over the UK. We have been fast tracked onto the assessment centre days for the Summer Internship or Year Placement at EY as a result of the programme which will be very beneficial to future careers, as we will gain first hand experience in the industry. Gained LOTS of networking skills! Also we had to complete a case study to present to a panel which are skills that will always be required in this line of work.
The Company
It was laid out well, we met a few EY people, had information sessions on Assurance and Tax which were done in a presentation and Panel discussion style. We had a chance to network with EY graduate scheme workers, and have a more informal dinner with others. We also then applied what we had learnt to a case study which we then presented so I felt the information I received sunk in well!
As I said above the general atmosphere was very friendly due to the type of people who were invited onto the programme. I felt it was quite a relaxed approach with questions encouraged. There was a lot of information to take in but it was broken down well into sections with plenty of breaks and food. There were good ice breakers to start the experience off also.
EY have given us the chance to go further into this career through the summer internship/year placement opportunities they have on offer for next summer. They have given us some great skills required for being successful in the assessment centre days to give us the best chance of getting a place. We also did a task which helped us learn more about our traits, for example if we are a leader or more of a people person or someone who really follows the rules etc.
With a 2 day experience it is difficult to know exactly what life is like at EY, but from the many people we spoke to it seems that there is no 'average day' as such, each day differs quite a lot. We didn't get a chance to visit the working floors but I understand that it could've been quite interrupting for the EY staff if 35 odd students started walking around. However the amount of EY staff who gave up their time to help give us a better understanding of working for EY was great.
The company culture at EY really is down to the people within it. They have huge goals to expand the company and aspirations to achieve by 2020 which I really like. You are more trusted at EY to get on with the work you need to do and you can chose how and when you do it as long as it is done by the deadline and up to standard which is an approach to be valued.
In terms of my future, before going I wasn't really sure this industry was right for me but now I have been it is something I am highly drawn to. The career progression beyond the graduate programme at EY is very good which I had no idea about before, and this attracts me to the business. I won't now bother looking at the other big 4 companies let alone applying as I love the people and friendly focus at EY because I think that makes a huge difference in a job.
Everything Else
The travel to and from the event was reimbursed by EY and they covered all food costs so there was no cost to me for attending the event.
As I have said above, lots and lots of people were available during the 2 days to network and ask about their jobs.
There was a meal held at the local Jamies Italian which was friendly and informal. As well as a more formal networking lunch. The variety here was perfect to find out all we wanted to know.
There seems to be quite a few socials at EY for the staff, as well as huge opportunities to travel with EY to take your job global. Within the year placement programme there is a chance to go to florida for an intern trip.
Absolutely. Whilst some people may argue they were biased to tell us all the good bits about working for EY, the networking allowed us to find out what people least like also for us to weigh up a career with EY for ourselves. It is a shame all my friends will be joining me in second year in September so I can't recommend that they go as it is solely a first year experience.
