About You
I really enjoyed this insight (spring week) because everything was taken care of, and it provided me a better understanding of how the firm worked, what was the day-to-day responsabilities and work of J.P. Morgan employees. It also allowed me to network with numerous people in the hierarchy. With a lot of presentations and group exercises, the week was very fun and educational.
I felt very valued during the week, I almost felt that I was already part of the firm, and that people there really wanted me to see how much they would love to have me working at J.P. Morgan. A lot of people told us that if we were there it was because we were very skilled and exceptionnal individuals, and therefore we had very good relationships with graduates or employees. Moreover, we had everything we needed to feel good during the week (accomodations, events, lunches...).
I recieved a lot of guidance from the employees of the firm and the people in charge of the recruitement, both in general about my studies and what could be great for me to do outside my university to improve my skills and in particular about the firm, what job could fit me the most, what were the skilled needed to work there, and they gave me a lot of advices about the interviews that took place at the end of the week to secure a 2 month internship. The majority of people I met talked about their personal experience and the mistakes they did, or the most valuable things they did, to provide me advice for my work-life in the future.
The skills that I developed during my time at the firm will be very useful for my studies because I mainly learned that I had to work on my own to achieve my goals, and not only follow the courses at my university. They also showed us during the presentations a lot of field they work on at the firm and gave us a deeper understanding of certain things we may have studied but here it was really more fit in the reality of the work of a J.P. Morgan employee. I will definitely come back to my university smarter and moreeager to learn a lot of things to extend the skills I started dto develop during this week.
The Company
The insight was really well structured, we had a very precise agenda and we would never get bored. I noticed that a lot of things we did during the first or two days of the week were actually useful for the following days and exercises we did. We had a lot of events which were very structured as well, such as networking or work-shadowing, which showed us how well-organized was the firm and therefore the insight week.
The atmosphere was really fun and professional at the same time, we would alternate between high-level presentations about the technology at the firm (some of them were really fun as well, depending of the people), and fun group exercises that were also educational. Moreover, everyone at the firm and in the stuents who attended this insight were really nice and fun, and we even went for a bowling session which was surprisingly fun, even though I don't like bowling that much.
I think the company invested a lot on personal training and development, because they paid us basically everything, so we could feel good and be confortable during the week. They also invested a ot for their group exercises sessions and networking sessions, to make me feel that I was special and that they wanted me at the firm.
It helped me a lot because I was able to see (by work shadowing events) what people who worked here as full time employees were doing every day, and what responsabilities they were given, and what were their relationship with their hierarchy. We really were able to see what it would be to work at the firm.
It helped a lot because I realized I had a wrong image of the culture at the firm, and I could see during the group exercises and the networking sessions that the reality was slightly different. The amount of importance the company gives to client relationships and teamworking were really surprising for me and I was able to discover it during the sessions I spoke about in the above.
It was very valuable because I was able to see what people were really doing as employees of the firm, and every day had its lot of people telling us about the career opportunities at J.P. Morgan and the opportunities of evolution, changing location and/or field. What is better than seeing directly how things work for the career's evolution at a firm to decide on your career path?
Everything Else
The company paid for my flight and my accomodation during the week (4-star hotel at a walking distance from the office).
Yes there were a lot of networking opportunities, both organized ones around lunch or dinner and more spontaneous ons when we were work-shadowing employees and they would introduce us to the people in their teams or their managers. Everyday basically had its share of social event and each and everyone of them was really interesting.
The networking and social events opportunities were really well organised, and we had the opportunity to meet different people with different responsabilities and level within the hierarchy of the company. There were a lot of people in each social event and we could definitely meet different people during one event and talk to them openly, they provided a lot of advices and fascinating anecdotes about their work experiences.
Yes I asked a lot of question about that to the employees I met, and there is a lot of societies within the company that you can join. It is very valued by J.P. Morgan and allows you to meet a lot of new people outside your division and to address to a subject that you care about. In addition to that, employees often have group exercises and simulations (as hackatons, video game challenges...) that look very fun and important for team-building.
Yes I would definitely highly recommend this insight to a friend or a coleague, it has been an amazing experience and the opportunity to meet a lot of smart and friendly people, I learned a lot about what I wanted to do as a job and technical skills required for this kind of job.
