The Role
Enjoyed the culture, felt valued as an intern. Given a fair bit of responsability at times, which helped personal development and confidence. Felt at times I was over-challenged, whereas at others I was just doing routine tasks. Could have been better if there was more of a middle ground, or at least some more challenges but with better guidance and support.
Colleagues appreciated the work done by interns and praised work when it was due - this helped confidence. I was given responsability for different projects which showed that the employees put faith in their interns.
Managers are willing to stay later to help interns. However, sometimes they are too busy to provide you with continuous support which is at times needed.
At times I was given a lot of work today, but on general I felt I could have been pushed more.
Put in charge of presentations/models, as opposed to creating a few slides here and there, or just ammending incumbent models.
My university is rather academic with their approach, whereas banks are incredibly practical, and will avoid using theory if it is of minimal relevance. Nonetheless, a general appreciation of the practical application of theories will help better understand the theory, and in particular what it is used for.
The Company
Laid back compared to other banks. Friendly, not too stressed.
Confusion with regard to the team I was assigned to. There could have been more social/networking events.
Given a wide range of tasks, so helped the progression of a variety of skills. Worked close to senior members, so aided the development of communication skills.
Subsidised Canteen
Enjoyed the work environment above all - the people are genuinely nice to be around, which helped given the pressure and stress imposed by the industry they operate in.
The Culture
Met for drinks every friday (and everyday during training). Fairly regularly go to lunch together.
High, as expected in the City.
More bars and pubs rather than clubs - had to travel elsewhere in London to go clubbing.
Invited to football matches with my team, and had a day out volunteering at a farm.
