About You
I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Discover EY. It was very insightful and gave me a real understanding of the tax and assurance lines and also what EY as a firm is all about. After attending this insight programme, I'm certain that I'm going to go forward with the summer internship.
Everyone I met was incredibly friendly and happy to talk about their role and EY. Justin and Sejal who coordinated the programme were very approachable and made me feel valued.
During the programme we undertook a client pitch exercise. I believe that I received a lot of guidance and support from various EY employees during that activity. The employees that I met at dinner on the first day were also very supprtive. They didn't hesistate to tell me about their role and give me support in choosing what role would suit me best in a firm like EY.
I received a lot of information from this programme. As I'm currently doing a module on financial accounting, it was interesting to find out how tax is applied in the real world. I believe that all the information I received will assist me further in my degree studies. I also developed a lot of skills. The client pitch exercise improved my analytical and presenting skills. It was a great opportunity for me to improve my interpersonal skills and teamworking skills as well.
The Company
I believe the insight was very well structured. Although both days were quite long, we got a lot done and had plenty of breaks in between as well. There wasn't any moment where we were doing nothing and so I believe that my time at EY was used very effectively and efficiently. I liked how the structure of the first day was that we found out information about EY and then in the second day, we applied our knowledge to a group task.
The general atmosphere was great. All the staff were friendly and happy to talk to us about themselves, their role and what they think about EY. The other students who also attended this insight programme were easy to work with and speak to. Even though I was only there for two days, I felt valued by the EY employees and I felt that they genuinely wanted me to gain as much as I could from this experience.
I felt that the firm invested in me to a far extent. The client pitch exercise really helped me to develop a lot of my skills. However, it would have been nice to have a professional to come in and speak to us about how to improve and develop skills that are required in the workplace.
Networking with employees and individuals on an industrial placement at both lunch and dinner really enabled me to understand what it would be like to have a full time role with EY. They gave me an insight into what a typical day at work would be for them and what sort of tasks they undertake on a regular basis.
The insight gave me a very clear idea of the company's culture and this is because every single employee who spoke to us said the same thing but in different ways and so it allowed me to truly understand what EY and its culture are all about. I learnt that its people and their development is very important to EY and that it values them very much. As well as that, the environment at EY is not only dynamic and stimulating, but also fun. The employees were clearly passionate about their jobs and they enjoy working for EY.
It was incredibly valuable. Through listening to employees at various different stages of their career (e.g. Both a partner and an executive spoke to us) in different service lines and also in different divisions within those sector lines, I believe that I gained enough information to aid my decision on my future career path. Finding out about what each division involves allowed me to think about where I could apply my skill set best.
Everything Else
I have not yet sent my expenses to EY for them to reimburse me.
There were plenty of opportunities for networking and meeting other employees of EY. The great thing was that they were all of different ages and in different business areas (e.g. Some where in UK&I whereas others were in FSO). What was nice was that the networking wasn't formal. One the first day, we had dinner with some of the employees and there was a system where the seating plan would be rotated and so this gave us a chance to speak to most of them.
They were very insightful and information. I found that a lot of the people I networked at the social event opportunities with were very honest about EY (especially the student on an industrial placement). I appreciated how they were truthful about how they felt about their job and their time at EY.
One of the partners at EY and one of the students on their industrial placement year who spoke to us told us about the various activities that employees can get involved in outside of their work. The partner mentioned that there was the EY Women's Network in which she was involved in. The students said that there were loads of courses you could get involved in at EY.
I would definitely recommend this insight to a friend who is either very interested in working at EY or someone who knows they want to either work in Tax or Assurance in the future. Overall, I believe it gave me a detailed overview of the operations at EY, its culture and what opportunities there are available there.
