About You
I really enjoyed this spring insight week because everything was taken care of, and it provided me a better understanding of how the firm worked, what was the day-to-day responsabilities and work of J.P. Morgan employees. There were many activities that the spring interns were involved in; these were from presentations, to having a walk of the 'wild side' but especially during the agile game, which was very competitive and fun. The fact that the recruitment team was so enthusiastic made the week even better.
I felt very valued during my time at J.P. Morgan as they booked my hotel, lunches, travel and made sure all social events were close by. The fact that they paid so much detail to the small things made it easier to enjoy and feel relaxed. Also members of J.P. Morgan answered all of my questions in detailed and showed that they cared about the spring interns.
Everybody we talked to was extremely helpful. Nobody said no if we asked for help, advice, or if we could get in touch with them later on for future questions. That really talks about how people are in JP Morgan, considering how difficult it is to be hired by them.
I feel like i have already developed my skills and i just utilised them during this week. However it was good to put them to practice as you don't want to lose these skills as they are very important for the work place, and team projects. However in terms of my degree they didn't help to a large extent.
The Company
Everything was planned really well and we never had any issues. They really thought and took care of every little detail. Also we had a very precise agenda and we would never get bored. I noticed that a lot of things we did during the first or two days of the week were actually useful for the following days and exercises we did. We had a lot of events which were very structured as well, such as networking or work-shadowing, which showed us how well-organized was the firm and therefore the insight week.
The atmosphere was really fun and professional at the same time, we would alternate between high-level presentations and fun group exercises that were also educational. Moreover, everyone at the firm and in the students who attended this insight were really nice and fun we also went out to sprinkles. however my main issue was that during the last day i was placed into a group who only wanted to be evaluated well, so they kept shouting there ideas so that they can be heard instead of developing one idea and working a team. So i think they need to hide the fact that someone is evaluating the group as this will show, how people actually behave.
I think the company invested a lot on personal training and development, because they paid everything for us, so we could feel good and be comfortable during the week. They also invested a lot for their group exercises sessions and networking sessions, to make me feel that I was special and that they wanted me at the firm.
The insight went a long way toward explaining what a full time role would involve because of a work shadowing session and presentations from employees within the division. We were provided with specific examples of daily duties from several different members of the Operations team, building a good sense of the division's functions as a whole.
The insight programme helped me understand the company culture primarily through interactions with a wide range of employees. There were presentations on how the bank conducts its business, its core values and what the firm looks for in employees but talking with members of the Operations team personified this culture.
It was very valuable because I was able to see what people were really doing as employees of the firm, and every day had its lot of people telling us about the career opportunities at J.P. Morgan and the opportunities of evolution, changing location and/or field. What is better than seeing directly how things work for the career's evolution at a firm to decide on your career path?
Everything Else
We had many opportunities for networking and meeting other employees for example we work shadowed some of them to see what they do on a day-to-day basis. However due to privacy we were not allowed to go into the specificity of things. However we networked with both employees and other interns, which allowed us to know them better.
The networking events were useful. Everyone was interested and willing to answer any queries.
Some employees gave up their free time to clear the 'New forest' and build a wildlife area on the Bournemouth Campus.
I would certainly recommend this programme to a friend as J.P. Morgan has left a very positive impression on me. It's often difficult to get a sense of a firm's culture and duties from their website but it is very apparent that J.P. Morgan have invested a lot of time and resources into making the insight programme true to its name.
