The Role
It was a really useful experience, I learnt loads about real engineering that I wouldn't have learnt at university.
It depended a bit on which team I was in, but on the whole the teams were really supportive and helpful.
Rolls-Royce encourage you to find your own way, but the management are always good at providing guidance when it's needed.
There often wasn't enough work to do. Sometimes it goes too far the other way though, but it's good that the hours are quite flexible.
I was given quite a major engine performance task to solve, which was certainly a really useful experience.
The placement gave me some really good perspective for the degree.
The Company
The atmosphere sometimes wasn't as personal as I'd have expected, but I think that might be normal for a large organisation.
HR were sometimes a bit useless at processing the application. They take on loads of interns/grads every year so there's always a few mistakes.
There were lots of training courses available, if you wanted them.
Flexi Time
Subsidised/Company Gym
Financial Bonus
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
Above 25 days holiday
Healthcare from home
The graduate scheme is apparently really good. There's also a welcome bonus, and a final year bursary available. The graduate scheme gives you the opportunity to sample loads of different areas of the company before choosing your final role.
The Culture
It was great that there were other interns working there too; the social side of things was excellent. There's also a society who provide subsidised social events.
Filton is a really cheap part of Bristol, although the city centre is more expensive. Rent was around £320 for a shared house in Filton.
The nightlife in Bristol is brilliant, although if you live in the Filton area, then it's a taxi/bus ride to get into town.
The Apprentice Association organised loads of charity, sporting and social events; all of which are subsidised by R-R. There's plenty of other societies to get involved with too.
