The Role
I very much enjoyed my placement at IBM. The placement scheme offered here pushes the intern enough to spark some real personal development world but also allows adequate time for social activities and provides opportunities to give back to the community.
I was given the chance to work specifically on a cIBM contract (rather than work internally for IBM). Nobody on the account knew I was an intern apart from my manager. This meant I was always treated with the same value and respect as any other FTE. I was presented with the same level of opportunity and responsibility as everyone else.
I was given a lot of support, however it is also understood that if your were competent enough to pass the IPAT and various interview stages then you should be capable of completing tasks without needing help every step of the way. Support is provided when it is needed but you will be required to think for yourself.
I was very busy. However, this is not to say I didn't have personal time. It meant while I was in the office I was engaged and had meaningful work to do.
I was given a customer-facing role so I was had a lot of responsibility from the start as I was representing IBM. Additionally, as my role progressed I was given the responsibility our 3rd party outsourcing and managing project revenue.
I have picked up many invaluable skills at IBM, however some of the most important skills included: client focus, expectation management and time management. This will help me focus and prioritize better at university. I know also have a better understanding of how things work as the placement has allowed me to put theory into practice.
The Company
The placement scheme is very well organized and there are set steps throughout the year where you present your achievements and targets. This helps you to keep focused on the bigger picture.
Flexi Time
Company Parties/Events
Working from home
Healthcare/Dental
The only issues here was that unlike many other firms your performance does not have too much sway on whether you can come back as a grad.
The Culture
London Prices.
London Nightlife.
There were giveback opportunities and events to attend. However there were not many IBM funded social events.
