The Role
Extremely enjoyable, not only have I learnt a tremendous amount about the investment industry, but the entire team I have worked with have been very welcoming.
The team was very friendly and always made me feel welcome.
Questions were always encouraged, though I would say some consultants were better considerably better at answering questions and clarifying misunderstandings than others.
This seemed to swing from one extreme to the other. The first few weeks were very quiet, although this wasn't just me but the whole team. However, my final two and a half weeks were rather busy, I often had 4-5 projects on the go simultaneously.
I was given several projects which I was solely responsible for. For the most part I worked on projects a graduate analyst would be expected to work on.
The knowledge of the investment industry I have gained as part of my internship will be invaluable when I begin my Master's degree. Furthermore, the Excel skills I have developed will also prove useful, both in academia and in the world of work.
The Company
Very friendly. Nobody was intimidating to talk to, no matter how senior.
Very well organised. My first day was an induction day in London, which was extremely useful. Initiatives such as the buddy system really helped to structure my first few weeks in the office.
An induction day as well as regular intern training session conference calls really helped me to make the most of accessing Mercer's vast intellectual capital resources.
National Travel
Company Parties/Events
Very appealing - Mercer is a diverse organisation with many opportunities for an individual to pursue their interests.
The Culture
Social activities consisted of team lunches, a cocktail making class, and several investment manager meals.
I come from Liverpool so living costs were not an issue. In terms of socialising; I honestly don't remember paying for anything during the whole time I was at Mercer.
Liverpool is deservedly renowned for it's nightlife.
I was not aware of any extra-curricular activities taking place.
