    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed the fact that after I had finished my training, I was trusted to do what needs to be done to do the job. I had guidance when it was needed but I was also free to get lost in a problem and ask for help when I needed it which I found refreshing.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Everyone is happy to help if you have any questions, especially those in other departments (even other countries!). To the people in the company it doesn't matter if you've been here a long time or just started, if you have a question or need help in solving a problem there are always people willing to spend time with you to get to the answer.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • For me I enjoyed the fact there was no micromanaging of my day, I was expected to turn up on time and know what I needed to do that day. When I had questions my supervisors were happy to take the time to explain what I needed to know and in detail. There were also reviews during my internship which gave really good feedback on what I'm doing good and areas to improve.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Work load is quite evenly spread amongst the team so when you think you're taking on a bit more than you can handle it's actively encouraged to to focus on what you currently have to work on and then you don't have to worry about finishing what you have in a rush but can take your time to get a good solution.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • From the moment I had finished my training I had similar responsibilities as other workers in my department with the exception of doing external teachings. This gives you the feeling of being a real part of the team and not someone who's just there temporarily. Towards the end of the internship I had a deeper understanding of the processes around the office and was able to be a go to person for certain requests.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The skills are directly related to my degree and they can be used to build a career on. I was able to become a certified developer for one of the main programs developed by my company which gives global recognition of my proficiencies with the software. But apart from technical skills, the soft skills I've learnt from dealing with people on a day to day basis will be of great use in the future.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • A very positive but focused atmosphere. Everyone has a job to do and a timeline to do it by, but that doesn't stop people having conversations around cubicles, talking about weekend plans and life updates. There is never any pressure to make you feel like you have to be staring at your screen all day nor to feel like you have to work later because some others might be doing so.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Everything was arranged without a hitch, I was able to complete my internship on time and with some flexibility which I had requested before starting. I had regular meetings with my tutor who also came to the office and meetings were able to be set up without too much worry about matching calendars.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I was invited to join on field sales team on meetings at other companies and also to take place at a technology roadshow of sorts where the company had a stand to show off their products. I was also invited to take part in some of the certifications and trainings where the cost would be prohibitive to individuals, which really helped with the project I was working on during my time there.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised Canteen

    National Travel

    Company Parties/Events

    Staff Sales/Staff Shop

    Travel loan

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • The progression opportunities are a real bonus, you see quite often emails regarding internal promotion opportunities and the paths you can choose are well detailed and easily visible within the organisation.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There were multiple people from my university doing an internship at the same time as me which made things more relaxed and made going to company events more enjoyable.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I travelled about 30 minutes to work from my house where the costs of living are higher but I would assume it's relatively cheaper to live closer to the office.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • It's a relatively small town/city where the office is located so the nightlife is a bit limited.

    2/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Quite a few, there were always people going to events in cities in the surrounding area and during employee appreciation week there are numerous activities inside the office. We've had team building exercises at an Escape Room and also simply gone out for dinner when a group of people are feeling hungry.
