About You
I really enjoyed my time at Hogan Lovells. It was extremely insightful, and confirmed my passion to go into law. Everybody was extremely friendly which meant I felt comfortable during my time at the firm and I got on with all of the employees extremely well. There was a perfect balance of time between socialising and gaining a better understanding of the culture of the firm with skills and information workshops to develop out knowledge of the law.
I felt very valued at work. All of the staff were open and had time to invest in me. When I asked questions they invited further debate. I got on with everyone at the firm extremely well and was encouraged to speak with every employee I met, from trainees through to partners.
All of the staff were extremely helpful and took time out of their day to explain tasks and answer any questions I had about the tasks to ensure I could get it finished to the highest standard. My supervisor ensured I had all of the necessary tools and guidance to complete any work I was set.
The skills I developed on the vacation scheme were extremely useful. We had a presentation workshop which developed my skills in public speaking, which will be useful for assessments in my degree. Having not studied law I was apprehensive about whether I would be able to understand the legal technicalities necessary to complete the trainee level work assigned to me by my supervisor. However, the workshops were extremely useful and taught me everything from research methods, to financial terminology, to how to draw up a contract.
The Company
The vacation scheme was extremely well structured. Over the two weeks I spent a week in two different departments giving me a chance to experience a broad variety of the work the firm is involved in. Every day their were different workshops which touched on all aspects of the law, from advocacy workshops to financial case studies. These workshops gave me further confidence in the tasks my supervisor assigned me. Furthermore there was plenty of time for fun over the vacation scheme! Hogan Lovells had arranged a variety of activities from a cooking workshop with trainees, to meals with partners.
The atmosphere at the firm was extremely friendly and open. Everyone was willing to take time out of their day to make me feel comfortable. Additionally Hogan Lovells encouraged integration between all of the other students on the scheme. This meant there was not a highly competitive environment, but instead we were sociable and supportive with one another.
The firm invested heavily in personal training and development. They organised an array of workshops with many speakers from outside of the firm invited to run workshops for us. Furthermore each and every employee took time to develop my skills and expand my understanding of the role of a commercial lawyer.
The insight was extremely helpful in helping me to understand what it would be like to have a full time role within the company. I was given access to trainee level work, but was also invited along to court, team meetings, and client calls. All of this gave me an understanding of each role within Hogan Lovells.
The insight helped me understand the company culture. Having spent two weeks there I could get a good feel for the firm. Simply speaking to the employees I learnt that they are a firm who invest in their people, and welcome diversity and enthusiasm in their employees. It was also clear the firm encourages a good work/life balance.
It was extremely useful in helping me to decide on my future career path. It confirmed my passion to pursue law as a career and gave me a 360 degree view of life as a commercial lawyer. I also was able to appreciate the variation of work in the different departments.
Everything Else
We were paid extremely well and I was able to cover all of my expenses, and made some money too! The generous allowance meant that logistics of transport and accommodation were easy and that everybody who wanted to was able to take part in the vacation scheme at Hogan Lovells.
There were lots of opportunities to network and meet other employees. There were officially organised events such as meals, cookery classes, and drinks events. However, every day I was invited to go out with the trainees or supervisors just to catch up with them over a coffee and ask any questions I had.
They were a nice way to get to know the employees and learn more abut the profession.
I found out that Hogan Lovells really stresses the important of citizenship in their employees.
I would definitely recommend this vacation scheme to a friend.
