The Role
I found the entire experience fairly enjoyable. Adjusting to a 9-5 work routine proved easier than I expected. The job role I worked in is not something I would have typically gone for, and as such there were times where i felt less engaged than someone with a greater passion for business may feel. I was based in an international team, meaning that the office i worked in was not always as busy as I expected it would be when I first started. Despite this the team were welcoming and friendly, and I felt a part of it very quickly!
Initially I did not feel very valued, as I did not have much work to complete, and spent mos tof my time learning skills so that I could be of use later in the year. however around the 3-4 month mark I began to feel very valued. I was given the opportunity to share ideas, lead teaching sessions, and take on the role of a product owner, attending and contributing to fortnightly planning calls.
I was trained by the previous interns in an overlap between our contracts for the first 3 weeks. However after this I was on my own to some extent, as there were very few people in my office on a daily basis. I received as much help as possible from other members of the team using online tools such as skype and screen sharing. My task manager invested time in helping me get to grips with a number of skills, and would always help if I was stuck.
My work varied hugely, some weeks i would have nearly nothing to do, where as others I would be taking my laptop home from work and working over time. This was due to dependencies on other people causing delays, and time working to very close deadlines. Over all It probably evens out as being busy 3-4 days a week. I found my work far less intense than I found university studies.
I was given the role of a product owner, planning the fortnightly tasks for the portal that I was developing This portal was the first set of business reports developed in this format, and received a large amount of praise. Going on to be presented to IBM WW along with a number of other products our team has produced. This felt like a tremendous amount of exposure, knowing that a product I had worked on -as an intern- was being presented to some big names in IBM. I don't think many other placement would offer its interns an opportunity like this.
As my degree is a physics degree there is zero overlap with the skills I have learnt in my placement. I initially hoped to learn a number of OOP languages while at IBM, but have had very little exposure to these. In my job I have learnt: HTML, CSS, Cognos, Time management, Team work, I have also self taught: JavaScript, JQuery, These are al valuable skills and have allowed me to write a portfolio website for myself in my free time.
The Company
N/A There is only myself and an intern in our office on most days. All other members of our teama re communicated with via calls.
Slow starting but got far more interesting once I got beyond the 4th month

Subsidised/Company Gym

Financial Bonus
Working from home
I am not interested in a business focused career
The Culture
Not that i felt a part of. I felt like i didnt really fit into either of the two main groups. Labs, was very stereotypically "geeky" everyone just laughed about memes and twitch streams of games, it felt like there was a lot of competition to appear smart Foundation was very stereotypically "town rat" where everyone just wanted to go out and get drunk on fridays. I chose to spend most of my time with the labs students, but as i was based in foundation I did not have many interactions with them.
Moderate. Bus to work was a rip off for the year, but a friend gave me lifts.
Trash Winchester has one club called Vodka. It isnt good. Go to Southampton.
For labs interns who knew how to program, yes. Otherwise there were limited opportunities.
