About You
I enjoyed it very much. It was extremely informative, the Deloitte people involved were all very nice, so were the other participants. It definitely helped me decide whether Deloitte is the right company for me and which part of Tax I would like to go into (I have attended the Spring into Tax Consulting event in the Reading office).
I definitely felt valued. Deloitte invested time and resources into organising the event. The employees giving the presentation all seemed genuinely happy to be helping us, and it weren't just recent graduates, but also managers and senior managers, as well as one of the partners. We also had a session with a body language/presentation specialist which was very helpful.
We received a lot of guidance on the next steps of applying for positions with Deloitte. We were offered the option of fast tracking our application to the Summer Vacation Scheme and a considerable part of the even was devoted to presentation skills, group exercises and practice case studies. We also received presentations from people from different parts of Tax to give us an idea of what they deal with on daily basis.
I think presentation skills will always come in useful. The fact that we also received assessment centre practice, played a business game and received practice interviews will help me in the future when I'm applying for a job, be it with Deloitte or another company. My knowledge of tax is also much bigger than before the event, which might be useful in my degree.
The Company
It was very well structured. We received a very detailed plan on the first day that was followed very closely. There were no gaps and we always knew what was coming next. The people running it made it all run smoothly, so we weren't left waiting around or running over. The only thing most participants noted was that a few more breaks would have been helpful.
The atmosphere was very good. I really enjoyed chatting with other participants as we were all from different universities and doing different degrees. People running it were also very nice, funny, and approachable, always available to answer our questions. The Deloitte people I met during dinner on the first day were also a pleasure to talk to and quite laid back. It gave me a feeling that Deloitte is a very welcoming company.
They definitely invested a lot. We received interview practice, where we were given comments on our skills and what we should improve before we come in for the real thing. We also played a business game that opened our eyes to how different departments can cooperate, and also how important working as a team is in general.
The employees that came to talk to us made an effort to describe their day to day activities to give us an idea of what we can expect. It was also very useful that we heard both from more experienced people (managers, senior managers) and recent graduates in their first year at the company. This gave us an idea of how our job will evolve over time. We were also told about the career progression.
It definitely did. I expected it to be much more corporate, but the atmosphere was nice. It was stressed that positions in tax require a lot of work and dedication, but it also appeared to me that everyone I spoke to enjoyed their job. The conversations with HR people also showed that the company is quite flexible and tries to keep its people happy.
It gave me a much better, personal insight into what life as a tax consultant looks like than I would have got on the internet. I got to speak to people who work in tax every day, on different career levels and in different departments, which gave me an idea of what my own career there might look like. I also got a feel of the company culture.
Everything Else
Travel expenses up to 50 pounds were reimbursed, we were also provided lunch and dinner on the first day and breakfast and lunch on the second day, as well as a hotel stay.
They were ok, though could have been better. The main networking event was the dinner on the first day. It was also possible to ask questions during the sessions, however, there wasn't much time for it.
They were't bad, however, during dinner I got seated at a table with one of the organisers of the event, an HR employee. Although he was great and answered all of our questions about recruitment and the company in a lot of detail, he wasn't able to provide us with specific information about working in tax. Fortunately, some other employees decided to hang around after and we could chat with them then.
Yes, there was quite a bit of talk about different employees getting involved in charity actions together - climbing mountains, running marathons etc. The Reading office also has an on-site gym with occasional classes.
I absolutely would. It was very informative, friendly and allowed me to learn a lot about the company and career in tax itself. I would definitely recommend it to anyone.
