The Role
Having previously been on other placements at other companies I felt this one was much more organised and challenging. This meant I gained alot more from the placement
My department ensured I settled in easily and i got on well with all the department, but particularly the team members I worked closely with.
I had excellent support from my manager. Often is the case in companies is you are set with a manager that has little or no time to give you support/guideance. I found my manager would always aim to help me as soon as possible. I was also set clear objectives at the start of my placement, we reviewed these regularly to ensure that I was on track to meet them.
With clear objectives set at the beginning of my placement, and the extra work I was given when required I never found myself with othing to do. At some points I may be asked to juggle my priorities in order to get something done urgently but that is all part of the experience and was a good skill to develop.
I was given a large amount of responsibility with some of my work feeding directly to the Plant Manager.
This placement enabled me to put my university studies into practice whilst developing other skills that will be vital for a sucessful career in the future. Additional training courses can be taken in a wide range of areas and all you had to do was ask and there was never any objections to you doing them.
The Company
Due to the flexible hours you could find you are one of few left on a friday afternoon, but normally the office has plenty going on.
The placement was very well organised from prior to starting right through to the process after the placement with regards to graduate job offers.
There was a large amount of investment in students training and development. This included detailed company inductions and full day insights into the whole manufacturing business area. These gave you the oppurtunity to see the business as a whole not as just the particular department you were working in.
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Subsidised/Company Gym
Company Parties/Events
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
The company is keen to retain students that they see have potential for future grad programmes
The Culture
There is plent of social groups both within the company but also outside with the interns and grads going out regularly.
Over the summer most summer interns stayed at Derby Uni Halls this was only around £70 a week.
Not the most amazing but a night out is how you make it! Nearby towns like nottingham and sheffield are much better.
There are many different activities both sport and non sport related to get involved in.
