About You
I was given a lot of work to do and the people I worked with were very friendly, helpful and welcoming. I was made to feel like a valued member of the team and this helped me to get the most out of the placement.
I was given real substantive work to do and treated like a member of the team, which was amazing.
I was left to my own devices a fair bit but considering how time management and independent working were part of the job, I expected this. There was always someone there when I needed help.
I was given a real insight into commercial law and the day to day life of a commercial solicitor and this helped me to narrow down my options for the future.
The Company
It was a very well structured placement, with clear goals and set pieces of work to compliment the day to day tasks. I was introduced fluidly to all aspects of the business.
Everyone was chatty, supportive and friendly, although it was clearly a hardworking environment. The social activities were a highlight.
I didn't feel like what I was doing was essential, but on a one week placement this was expected. It clearly wasn't busy work and I was able to be useful and see real work in action so that was enough.
I have a real understanding now of what a training contract at a big commercial firm would be like.
They place huge importance on understanding their culture and values: you never get away from it!
It made me think very hard about my future and what I really want, based off lived experience and real information:
Everything Else
I was paid a good amount for this placement which was a nice bonus :)
There were a couple of lunches and when I made conversation everyone was willing to talk with me.
They were good, had a chance to talk to trainees and higher ups and get a sense of the firm.
Not a whole lot, although the opportunities are clearly there. I didn't ask so I suppose that's why I wasn't told.
It was all in all an excellent placement and I have already recommended others to apply to opportunities at Shoosmiths.
