The Role
I really enjoyed my placement year at IBM as it gave me opportunities I did not imagine. I was able to get a balance of Business and Technical skills in the projects I was involved in. I found it an incredibly valuable learning experience, which was enabled by the incredible managers and colleagues that I had the chance to work with.
Colleagues I worked with were very approachable and very fun to be around. They made being at work fun and not boring! With the range of tasks given by task manager and the responsibility levels ensured I was valued and trusted.
Throughout my placement I was given support from my Task Manager, Early Professional manager, and colleagues. They are all very friendly and helpful people with a lot of experience in what they do. Feedback was given on a regular basis and it was made very clear throughout the year that anyone was happy to help with guidance.
This was dependent on the tasks and projects I was given. At times I would be extremely busy and some times I was able to leave earlier than 5pm.
As you progress though your placement you are given more and more responsibility dependent on your capability. If you show you are capable you will be given the chance to manage more responsibility. The further you are through your placement the more knowledgeable you will be with the ways IBM work, therefore more responsibility will be assigned to you.
I think I have developed quite a lot, both personally and professionally. IBM has a lot of online resources and education which can be used to enhance your understanding of the different business lines. I am a lot confident in carrying out technical tasks then I was when I started my placement. I am confident all these skills will be extremely valuable when I go back to uni for my final year
The Company
I was based at the IBM Hursley branch which is near Southampton. I used to sit at a hot desk with two other interns of my team and every tuesday and thursday when other members of the business area come in, we would go out and have lunch together despite the age difference. Everyone was really fantastic!
I was given responsibility from day one and given the time I needed to pick up from previous interns and learn any necessary skills required to carry out day to day tasks!
There are countless amounts of online training courses which are paid for by IBM. Throughout the year there are plenty events available for you to get stuck into. IBM's graduate training is far superior to its placement year students however, as you go straight into work, you pick things up from your colleagues in an instance.

Incredibly appealing. The company is so vast in size that there are many areas I would like to delve into as a graduate. They have a large training budget and plenty of room for growth and opportunity IBM is also going through a transition phase which sounds daunting but as a grad it would give me a great amount of excitement to be able to learn about these new areas of technology. It is a very innovative company full of very smart people.
