The Role
I enjoyed my time at IBM. Working for such a large company you get many opportunities. For example, I have shadowed in Leeds, helped out at careers fairs representing IBM and had many meetings in London. Personally I found working in Finance does not suit me, so did not enjoy the job as much as I could have, however this is due to my job choice & location as oppose to the company.
I felt valued by colleagues & most people are grateful for work I have done for them.
Was supported and guided throughout my placement. My task manager worked in another location & was always very busy but would make time. There were also people I worked with in my location who I could always ask for help. You are also assigned an Early Programmes Manager (equivalent to personal tutor at uni), if I have any problems could always go to them.
Completely varied day to day. I have worked until midnight and other days have had nothing that needed to be done. However I could always find something to do. Also there is plenty of education to do if you find yourself with no work.
I was given a quite a lot of responsibility. You are given work that is important to the organisation. For example, I did a report every week that was shown to the General Manager of IBM UK every week. Also my manager gave me the responsibility of spending a week with a graduate coming into my team to train. Most interns I know have had quite a lot of responsibility in their roles.
Working a year in IBM has improved my skills to a great extent. I study economics so my role is not directly linked, however I can take away soft skills & analysing/excel skills.
The Company
The office atmosphere varies, a lot of employees work from home a lot so some days can be very quiet.
Overall the scheme is well organised. There are plenty opportunities for interns to be involved in different things. You also have structured reviews (3 months, 6 months & Final Presentation).

Working from home
I am applying back to IBM, but will be applying back to the London office for Consultancy.
The Culture
Yes. A lot of placement students based in North Harbour, so always people to socialise with.
Portsmouth is reasonable, so can afford to go out quite a lot.
Not great, Portsmouth is quite a small city so only a few clubs to go to. However with the right people, it isn't so bad.
Not through IBM, but plenty to do around the Portsmouth area.
