The Role
I enjoyed the work place and the people I worked with, however, the job was very repetitive and tasks that I was assigned to were simple and not challenging enough. My job was mostly admin based on excel all day every day It was not what I expected when applying for a technical placement.
I did feel valued within my team, they were all very grateful of the work that I did for them.
I had minimal contact with my manager, she was too busy to talk and get back to me most of the time. Therefore we barely spoke throughout my placement. Would have been better if she was based in same location or had regular calls, I would have got alot more out of placement. However, the rest of my team were excellent at giving me support when needed, they always put the time in to explain and give me guidance.
I wasn't very busy at all most of the time, I had one regular report that took 2 hours at most every day, then the rest was ad hoc or helping out other members of the team.
I wasn't given much responsibility within my team, I was given simple and basic tasks most of the time. Even after continuously asking for more work and more challenging tasks, I was still given simple tasks, such as to go and get this information from some accounts or copy and paste information from one spreadsheet to the next.
I developed my personal and professional skills by working within a large company. I attend a lot of workshops that IBM held about a variety of different skills, I found them very helpful and have helped to improve my personal skills, I can now take this knowledge forward into future jobs.
The Company
I sat with 6 other interns so the atmosphere was great, we were about to have a laugh and still get on with our work. I really enjoyed coming into the office when everyone was in.
Overall, the placement was well organised, there was alot of workshops set up for interns to explore different areas of the business and develop on skills.
There were many workshops for interns that I attended, they helped improve my knowledge of the business and my personal skills.
Above 25 days holiday
Working from home
There are a variety of grad schemes available in the key growth areas of IBM.
The Culture
Yes the social scene was very good, we all socialise together during the week and at the weekend.
The cost of living in Portsmouth is average so were able to go out often.
Nightlife wasn't that great with 4 clubs to choose from, however, there was enough of us to make it enjoyable.
Yes there were lots giveback opportunities such as going back to uni and represent IBM, big interview day.
