About You
I found that the insight week was extremely useful in providing me with an idea as to what Mace is like. It also gave me an opportunity to temporarily take my focus away from university studies and think about the likely possibilities for me after graduation. There is also a huge incentive for me to apply for a 3rd year placement with mace now since I am familiar with the company.
Our presence attending the insight week was acknowledged by all members of staff in Mace and everyone was extremely willing to inform us about their particular job roles and answer all the questions we asked about their work.
The week gave us the best possible tips when applying to jobs - there was plenty of information given about what should be on your CV to how to approach the assessment centres which are characteristic to most job applications.
The week not so much gave me information to improve my performance on my degree but more helped me to understand the real life applications of the course I am studying which is an invaluable skill; so that I can put the things I am learning about into context.
The Company
The week was perfectly structured, with a well balanced amount of time spent inside and outside the office. The site visits allowed us to do something different whilst still getting an insight into the industry and the talks given by members from the different job areas were well structured to allow plenty of time for all of our questions at the end.
Everyone was very welcoming and the office was the perfect environment to get to know some of the other people doing similar courses and pursuing similar career paths to me.
The Emerging Talents team were extremely keen to give us the exact skills that would be necessary during an assessment centre and the necessary information that should be put on our CV in order to attract their attention.
Regardless of which job role I decide to enter upon leaving University, I have a much greater understanding of all the opportunities available to me and what would be involved in a day to day basis in said role.
It was stressed to us the importance of Mace's values and we were briefed on them during the first session of the week. This gave us a very clear idea of the values that the company upholds and for me it was fantastic to see how consistently these values were ingrained through every facet of the company.
It gave me a clear idea of where I would be most suited in an engineering consultancy and at points even made me think about other roles that might be suited to me. This is reassuring since it is important to have a back up in case I find after a few months that I would prefer to be set up somewhere that requires more management than engineering skill for example.
Everything Else
My expenses during the week in travelling to and from the sites were reimbursed.
There were numerous opportunities given to us to speak with some employees about their experiences not only with Mace but with other firms all over the world. Many of the employees were more than happy to hand out their personal emails if we had any further questions.
There werent any social events planned for us but it was easy enough to ask an employee about their own personal experiences etc.
Many of the grad scheme employees could not stress enough the extent of the opportunities they had outside of work to get to know the other employees and bond with the people you're working with on a daily basis.
Absolutely. I think the week would be highly beneficial to anyone looking for a job somewhere like Mace. The availability of jobs for people with non-vocational courses was also encouraging and I would feel confident that any of my peers would appreciate the advice given and the experience gained from the insight week at Mace.
