The Role
Very much enjoyed the year. Had the opportunity to get involved with a vast number of different projects and programmes and also met some great people along the way.
Was treated like every other regular employee. I was given responsibility to manage programmes, attend external events and my opinion was valued by colleagues.
I was lucky in that I saw my task manager on an almost daily basis meaning I could easily ask them any questions that I had. They were also very helpful whilst I was settling in and gave me plenty of support / guidance. At IBM, you are also assigned an Early Professionals Manager who's job it is to support you throughout your year and help you develop professionally. I felt very supported by both of my managers and I never had any worries about approaching them for help.
The role has busy periods and quieter periods, however there was usually always something that I could be getting on with.
I was given lots of responsibility whilst on placement, including managing aspects of some large programmes. As the team I worked in was very small, lots of responsibility was given to me.
Many of the soft skills that I have developed whilst on placement will definitely come in handy back at University and certainly in a Graduate role. I also feel that I have developed specific knowledge on the area of Corporate Citizenship and am now planning to base my dissertation report around this area.
The Company
In the area of the office that I sat, there was usually a nice buzz about the place. On Fridays the office is completely dead as the majority of employees work from home on that day. There was also lots of other Interns which was nice.
IBM's intern programme is set up extremely well. There is a 2 day induction for all interns and you are completely supported throughout the whole year.
The 2 day induction gives you a good overview of IBM and helps get you set up with your laptop etc. There is also a wealth of online resources that you can use to undertake personal learning/training. I was also lucky to have had a handover period with my predecessor meaning they could show me the basics of the job and help me settle in.
Flexi Time
National Travel
Company Parties/Events
Above 25 days holiday
Working from home
No guarantee of a Graduate job, however higher chances than those who haven't undertaken an Internship with IBM.
The Culture
YES - lots of other Interns based at my office.
London is an expensive place to live.
Lots of bars / clubs in London.
IBM has a big emphasis on employee volunteering so there are lots of opportunities to get involved with these activities, outside of your normal job role.
