The Role
I highly enjoyed my placement with IBM this year. I was placed on a client site and got highly involved in a great deal of work.
I felt highly valued by my colleagues - often receiving feedback from my manager. Also the fact that some of my colleagues on the project came to me with questions and queries. I feel this underpins my value.
I was given a great deal of support and guidance when I initially joined IBM. I had a week handover which helped enormously and then a colleague of mine offered his assistance if I needed anything.
I always have something to do. Even when you think there isn't anything urgent that needs doing there is always something you can get on with.
I was given huge responsibility during my placement. Dealing with £millions on a monthly basis. The work I did enabled IBM to bill the client.
I feel this year has assisted my with my studies immensely. I have learned how consultancy works and in particular the financial aspects.
The Company
As I was placed on client site and in a highly challenging environment it was a stressful environment. However, my colleagues including my manager made it enjoyable.
The placement at IBM is highly organised considering the vast numbers of interns. However, when I arrived for my first day they weren't sure where I was working. I believe this was a small admin error so isn't a true reflection on how organised IBM is.
I didn't necessarily need training for my role as it is very much on the job training of just getting on with it. However, we had a number of workshops throughout the year including help on delivering presentations which I found hugely insightful. This is something I can use throughout my career.
Financial Bonus
Company Parties/Events
Above 25 days holiday
I will be applying for the grad scheme as it looks fantastic so I would say highly appealing.
The Culture
Most thursdays interns would go for a drink outside the IBM office in Soutbank before heading over to Walkabout on the other side of the Thames for a few more drinks. I was say it is a decent social scene. Although as I was placed away from the head office I didn't always get involved.
Cost of living in london is very expensive. I did get a good deal however. Socialising in London is very expensive. I could go out once a week though so isn't all bad.
The nightlife in London is one of the best in the world so very good indeed.
At IBM they do the corporate games which is open to everyone. You compete against other corporations. There are plenty of opportunities out there. You can also do "Giveback" which is a scheme that you give back to both IBM and the local community. I helped out at various events.
