The Role
I really enjoyed my placement at IBM. I was given plenty of opportunity to grow my skills which will be fundamental to assisting me in acquiring a graduate job. I was given a lot of responsibility and trusted to take complete ownership of tasks that I took on. The social aspects of the role were great, we were introduced to other placement students early on and Hursley had a great placement student community.
My colleagues were really supportive during the on-boarding process and throughout my placement. I particularly enjoyed working with people of all different levels of seniority including execs. I gained a few mentors during my placement year which was extremely valuable to assist me with career direction and to allow me to explore other areas of the business.
Management and supervisors were extremely supportive when support was required.
My workload did vary throughout the year, I was able to manage my time meaning that. When the main aspects of my role were quiet, I was able to get involved in different types of work which allowed me to grow my skills in other areas which was a great opportunity. There are always plenty of tasks required by the team/business, managing your own work load is key to ensuring that you have a perfect balance of work.
I was given a lot of responsibility and ownership of tasks that I took on.
The skills that I developed will be extremely valuable to assist me in a future career. I acquired various transferable skills as well as invaluable insights into working in a large organisation and knowledge.
The Company
There was an overall friendly atmosphere in the office, I felt that everyone that I worked with was very approachable and helpful.
I was really impressed, a Facebook group is created to help you find housemates if you are relocating and get in contact with other students ahead of time. All information was given ahead of time, induction was informative.
I was able to shadow others in different areas of the business which was extremely useful for me to begin to search for areas where I may like to apply back to as a Graduate. I attended a careers fair which was ran and expensed by IBM was extremely useful and provided further insight into business units and allowed me to meet current graduates in areas that I may apply. There are endless opportunities to learn, invitations to join calls to learn more about the business are extremely frequent and are able to select which you would like to attend.

There are many extremely exciting roles at Graduate level. Anybody who would like a Graudate role must re-apply. At the end of the year, you go through a review process whereby you will receive a mark, high achievers are allowed to skip the assessment phase of the recruitment process. Others will go through the full recruitment process.
The Culture
Yes, many social events were organised within my team. Placement students also organised events and there was a great placement student community.
We lived in Winchester which was quite expensive for housing, I would recommend Eastleigh as an ideal location for future students as it is near by and tends to be slight cheaper than Winchester. However, Winchester was perfect for location for those who drove or those who were commuting via bus.
The nightlife was average, I would recommend nights out in Southampton over Winchester.
Plenty, loads of sports activities and also day trips are organised by the club house.
