The Role
I did enjoy working at IBM, it is a flexible company and it has a strong focus on developing and training its employees.
I worked for IBM for a year and 2 months and I always felt valued in the organization, even at the beginning of my placement, when my knowledge and skills had not fully developed.
I was given some support and guidance at the start of my placement, however I still think this is an area in which the company can be improve. My experience ( this may not be the same for all interns) I was in a financial role and I had to deal with large amounts of data, this information can be difficult to interpret especially at beginning, I believe if IBM offered more support dealing with this data could be a lot easier.
I was constantly busy, especially during month ends and quarter ends, and when I had free time I focused on developing my skills further, this placement is a great opportunity to cultivate your knowledge and skills.
During my placement I was given a great deal of responsibility, I was constantly assigned tasks which were very important to the business. In many cases my work you be used to make decisions that would affect the business directly.
This experience has been very useful for my studies as well as my , personal and professional growth. Now I want to explore project management as a career choice and having financial knowledge will definitely put me in a competitive advantage position
The Company
the atmosphere is the office was fine, I was based in a location that was going through a lot of changes, therefore the environment was not the best, however this is not the same on every IBM location I have been transferred to the London Office from the Portsmouth office and there is a massive difference.
I considered my placement to have been well organized, however I think handover could have been more comprehensive.
IBM does invest on training and you have all the opportunities to grow professionally and personally if you are looking for training and expose IBM is for you.
Flexi Time
Above 25 days holiday
Working from home
there are very good opportunities in IBM and some of them are very appealing, especially because IBM is a glogal company with opportunities World Wide.
The Culture
yes, social life was very good, there are many intern from different departments, this makes a huge difference since you never feel like you are on your own.
cost of living in Portsmouth was good not expensive at all, however socializing was a bit limited as there is not that much going on in the area where the IBM office was located.
the nightlife in the area where I worked was really quiet. a lot of companies are based in the same location so it was all very professional and serious.
yes, there were many opportunities to get involve in many activities, however in my role as financial analyst, it was difficult to take part of them since my role was constantly busy.
