The Role
I enjoyed my time at ALDI very much. The variety of the presentation ensures that you do not get bored working on the same tasks all year. You work in stores as well as in Head Office, meaning you get good variety.
I did feel very valued at Aldi. You complete work and tasks that are not pointless and just for the sake of it; they are useful for the company. At store level you are trained to assistant manager level, meaning you are running shifts within the store as the only manager.
There is a lot of support and guidance available through management. All employees have a manager for day to day tasks and one for personnel issues; not the same person. This means you can go to someone with any problems.
Very busy. At Aldi you work very hard, 10hr days every day. In store it is a very physical job, often you will be on your feet for 10 hrs with a half an hour break. There are both early starts; (5am) late finishes (1am) and night shifts. In store, due to the nature of the business, you will always be busy.
A lot. This must be the placement with the most amount of responsibility possible. In store you are trained to an assistant manager level. You will therefore be running shifts as the only manager for example; ordering stock for the store (tens of thousands of pounds) with no supervision once you are ready, as well as holding the safe, amongst other things.
I have gained a very large amount of skills on this placement. Ranging from general confidence and communication, to management skills and managing people; something that no/very little other placements will offer. The work ethic gained will aid me in the remainder of my degree and life, as will the employability skills.
The Company
In the second part of the placement, Head office, the atmosphere is good and professional. There is not really a 'fun' atmosphere, but it is an office so this is to be expected.. It if generally relaxed, but work needs to be completed in a timely manner and to a high standard.
Very well. The plan and structure of the year is well laid out, and you know what you will be doing all of the time. You are given a plan at the beginning of the year that is mostly stuck to, just the specifics of the time at head office are clarified nearer the time.
Placement students are a useful position for Aldi as you complete projects etc. There is less of a feeling of the company investing in you deliberately, but more that the tasks and responsibility given to you by Aldi will develop you own skills. They do invest time in you to get you sufficiently trained, an important concept at Aldi.
There is a chance to be offered the area manager job at the end of your year with Aldi. This is not a sure thing at all, it is only offered to those that excel throughout the year, something that is difficult. There is a chance however, and if you are good enough and lucky, you will receive a good job offer.
The Culture
Yes, to a certain extent. Roughly 10 students are taken on each year. However during your first half of the placement, you will all be working separately in different stores and will not know each other well at all. During time at head office, you will be in closer proximity, working together often. You will also have weekends off so you have time to socialise more.
Liverpool; living has been cheap as I live in a student house still. The area is cheap mostly.
Liverpool; so a very good nightlife.
No; not work related. T
