The Role
I had done alot of work experience before starting my year long internship. Non have been more challenging, interesting or educational on the functions of an international business. My department was spectacular in providing support and a breadth of responsibilities in a variety of roles throughout the year.
The responsibility that I was given with in the team from day one was exceptional. I was given my own patch to operate and run, I was also expected to develop my knowledge so that I could match with and discuss with my colleagues. By the end of my placement I felt like a true member of the team that could operate alongside, rather than underneath, my fellow team members.
IBM has a fantastic mentoring scheme. You will have you task managers, who will be managers within your business unit and they will make sure that you are operating the correct role with all the information required. You will also be assigned an Early Professionals Manager (EPM) who will act as a mentor on how to develop your professionalism and if you develop a good relationship with your EPM then the placement year becomes extremely pleasant and informative. As the EPM will reach out and give you opportunities to perform outside of your business unit and contribute back to IBM.
My role meant working late and not whining about it. I was notified of this before applying, but i regularly worked past my contracted 47 hours a week. I had no issue with this as the pressure of working in quarter end driven part of the business was rewarding and really chiseled some new skills to handle the stress and focus. Make sure to ask the expected hours in your business interviews!
I was given a full team members workload. I was trusted and supported accordingly.
Partially relevant to my course. Main areas of education were in regard to the management, leasing and lease financing Modules in my degree.
The Company
The team was superb and their atmosphere was contagious. But, as we were not based in south bank, the offices and catering facilities were poor in comparison.
It was very much an evolving plan. I was only taught what they believed I was ready to learn and given roles they thought I could fufil. It felt extremely natural. The only reason I can't give 10 is because the activities outside of my office work were not clearly organised or managed.
They invested alot of time in trying to develop my skills and ensured that I had the most support possible when applying back as graduate.
Subsidised/Company Gym
National Travel
Company Parties/Events
Above 25 days holiday
Very appealing, Especially within a London based sales role
The Culture
There were around 50-60 interns in my office. But due to the hours and demands of my job, and the fact I was living at home to save rent, I didn't get to socialise at lunch or after work. But I did hear that there was a brilliant Intern community outside of work and they regularly went out to socialise
Not sure as I rented at home and socialised in Winchester rather than Portsmouth.

Activities outside of work were never advertised frequently and were normally published a few days / a week before they took place.
