The Role
Getting started and fully settling in the role didn't take as long as I expected and now I love my role/job and am sad to leave the company and my team. I've met a large amount of new people and have made good friends. A placement year at Vauxhall shows you how to combine work and personal life and have a great time while being successful.
My colleagues always involved me in anything happening in the team, especially team meetings and events make your team bond with you and you feel like part of the group, even if only have been there for such a short period of time. They give me responsibility, always have an open ear and care for your well-being. Organising a team event or meal gives you brownie-points too! :)
My manager always made sure my work-load was sufficient, but never too much to not keep up. At Vauxhall, every student is given a mentor, that usually works in a different team, to give you support throughout the year, studies and anything else you like to address. And, there is never a stupid question!
At the beginning of the placement it was still rather slow and I just did my monthly reports and Adhoc work and helped where I could. Starting around Christmas time I was given more of my own projects which lead into further new ones and more tasks, now resulting in managing my own projects.
The skills learnt in the work place are skills for life whether academically, intellectually or personally. I truly value all I have encountered, learned, been trained on, experienced and seen throughout the year.
The Company
Lively, engaging, energetic, productive and happy. It doesn't matter what weather or day, my department always made it feel like a good and joyful day. People are polite, respecting and always up for a laugh!
Vauxhall did a very good job, They have been doing placements for 26 years now and know what students value and what sparks their interests. We were given several coporate and leisurely presentations for us to meet managers and understand how the business works. Also, Vauxhall has several houses arranged for students to live in, including gym passes, work schedules, handover period and group events throughout the year.
We were given training and development in tools and tasks in the business that are vital in everyday use as well as, dignity and behaviour at work, the company's philosophy and attitudes and values and even HR training just for people who sparked an interest in other departments than their own.

Jobs at Vauxhall are appealing, but can be difficult to get as so many people are employed at Vauxhall and internal movement is strong. Due to knowing how the company works and what their products and services are, I would consider and enjoy staying with the company in a few years time. But placement students do get the chance and possibility to be taken on as an employee once the year as been completed, so working for Vauxhall can get your whole career rolling.
The Culture
All of us on placement enjoy being with each other, we share our houses with our closest friends and have made some amazing memories. Something is always happening on the weekends or during the weeks and we enjoy socialising with each other and organising events.
Housing is definitely affordable, especially if you are used to London accommodation and living costs! It very much depends on how and where you spend your money, but it is easy to make living in this area relativiely cheap and affordable. a car would be strongly advised, but trains run straight to London St Pancras in less than 30 min!
As Luton is a student/university city, it does have some nightlife, but nothing spectacular. Luton does have a lot of cities and facilities around it, such as St. Albans and Harpenden that offer more pubs and clubs, but usually a good group of people can make a good night anyway.
Yes, the area offers many activities. Milton Keynes is not far, nor is London. There are shopping facilities, gyms, cinemas, bowling and arcades, going for walks in park, joining an event such as "Colour Obstable Runs", theme parks are about an hour or two away. So there's lots to organise and see.
