    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The year has gone by very quickly and I have gained a lot from the experience of working in such a large establishment. The number of undergraduates on this programme is a real selling point, as the community we have here helps the transition from full time education to full time work.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • From my experiences, all of the management were very supportive from the get-go. They are very inclusive and made me feel welcome from day 1, which is the same for my colleagues. The atmosphere in the office is a healthy one, and many colleagues seem satisfied by their jobs, which is crucial.

    4/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • 4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • The workload was varied on a daily basis, and managing the workload was one of the key skills which I have developed over this year. Some weeks can be manic, but this makes the days fly by, whilst others can be slow, allowing to catch up on some of the regular tasks.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given lots of responsibilities in my role, many tasks which were pivotal for the department, which is one of the better aspects of the placement. I wasn't there to make tea! I have had dealings both internally and externally, and this experience of responsibility really adds to the experiences.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I've become far more IT literate, as the vast majority of my time is spent on Excel/PPT, as well as improving many other competencies such as my communication and presenting - which may benefit me moving forwards in my later studies. This experience will be very handy in securing a graduate role.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • 4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The placement is very well organized and we had a good handover period where the role is passed on. The old intern passed down all of their knowledge to try and make the transition as easy as possible, which I thought was invaluable. They organize many social events so you can get to know one another, and help with relocating.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • 3/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • 3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • There isn't a external graduate scheme that Vauxhall employ, but they look to hire from previous undergraduates where they can. So this year is like a year long job interview. It encourages you to impress all managers, and not just your own, as you may be asked back in any capacity. The ratio between undergraduates and returners is pretty low, however.

    2/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • This aspect of the placement year has probably been the best. As there are a fair number of you, the socials are very good. The handover period helps to build friendships and from there most weekends are spent with fellow interns. Now that you have lots of disposable money, you really make the most of the weekends.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Luton Isn't the most desirable place in the world, but I was lucky that I lived in one of the better areas. There were also 3 other undergraduate houses in our estate, so people were always close by. This was handy in the evenings and weekends, and this really added to the placement experience.

    2/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Luton isn't renowned for its nightlife, nor should it be as the choice is extremely limited. It is pretty cheap however, so a few nights out in luton aren't bad. However, the train link into London only takes 25 mins, so it is right on the doorstep of so much choice. This can get expensive however, so this became more of a rare occasion.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
