About You
It was very informative and there was a great atmosphere, I enjoyed the insight days quite a lot. We had plenty of opportunities to network with people from all sectors at EY and with staff on placement years as well. I would definitely recommend the Discover EY programme to anyone looking for a career in finance.
We had the chance to work in groups to deliver a presentation, I felt valued whilst presenting as we all had a role within the group. We were given a made up case study of a company and were given the opportunity to interview the CEO and operations manager of this company. We then had to deliver a SWOT (Strength, Weakness, Opportunities and Threat) analysis of a company. We also received some freebies such as pens, notepads and water bottles which was a nice touch.
During the group work activities we had an experienced mentor supporting us, who gave us useful tips in regards to the interview process and presentation. We also received guidance on the next steps at EY that we could take such as a summer internship or industrial placement. We also received plenty of information regarding each sector of EY from experienced professionals and had the opportunity to ask any questions we had.
The group work helped me understand the type of work expected by EY and the information panels have given me a clearer idea of each section of EY such as the differences between audit and tax. The networking opportunities have also enabled me to find out more about the day to day life at EY. Information given about next steps has been very useful as well and I will definitely be applying to a summer internship at EY.
The Company
It was quite well structured with plenty of breaks. The first day involved a dinner at Jamie Oliver which was a very nice touch and I liked that they gave us a lot of opportunity to network with staff at EY and also fellow students on the programme. However the first day could have been a bit more interactive. Although this was made up for by the second day where we got more involved as we were required to work in groups to deliver a presentation and SWOT analysis.
The atmosphere was great and we got plenty of opportunities to network with each other. Staff were laid back and friendly and were eager to answer any questions we had. The location was great as well, being so close to London Bridge, the environment is really pretty. The building is nicely decorated as well.
It was only a two day insight so there wasn't really any personal training. In terms of personal development there were some teamwork and presentation skills required. Although I think the placement overall was more about information and an insight into how EY operates and their different service lines, so there wasn't a lot of opportunity for personal development.
The insight was great as it showed us the different service lines at EY and how they differed. For example we found out how Tax regulations are always changing thus those working in the tax service line constantly need to stay on top of new information. In addition to this we found out about the opportunities at EY such as the ability to work abroad.
The experience taught us a lot about how EY operates and what they look for in candidates. It helped us understand the company culture as we also got to network with a lot of the staff and were given the opportunity to ask them about the day to day work life at EY.
It was very valuable as it has shown me that my skill set would be best suited for a career in assurance, this was due to the fact that they had plenty of information panels, a handbook and networking opportunities. And it also helped as it showed us about next opportunities at EY such as summer internships and industrial placement.
Everything Else
It was not a paid opportunity as it was only two insight days. However EY offered to cover up to £100 worth of travel expenses and if your travel time was over 2 hours they provided you with a hotel room. They also paid for dinner at Jamie Oliver's on the first day.
There were loads of opportunities to network. Firstly we had the chance to ask a panel from each section of the firm questions about their job. We were also given the chance to network with staff over lunch and dinner. When we were doing the group work we were also given a mentor who gave us advice and information.
They were great as we got plenty of opportunities to network and could network over lunch and dinner. During the dinner at Jamie Oliver's we got the opportunity to meet plenty of the staff who worked at EY and got the chance to ask them any questions we had. We also had the opportunity to network with fellow students on the insight days.
The insight days were mostly focused on activities employees undertook at work. Employees did however mention that they would meet up outside of work to have some drinks and that there were plenty of parties that employees would be invited to such as boat parties. Also that there were a couple of societies within EY.
I would definitely recommend this insight to friends as it was very informative and useful. It was also a fun opportunity and the atmosphere at EY is great. For people who are interested in a job in finance this opportunity is fantastic. The requirements are also quite low and you can attend the EY insight days regardless of what degree you are undertaking.
