The Role
I found it quite hard to begin with only because of not being up to speed with the projects and work that was happening at the moment, but once all caught up it was great to have all the responsibility of a regular employee
I was treated as one of the team always and didn't find anyone thinking that my abilities or skills are any less than all my team members, it was usually the contrary - they appreciated a fresh eye on the work with a different way of thinking
I never felt like I couldn't ask questions or clarify if I was not understanding something, there was always someone there to help. Especially appreciated the Buddy system where all placements got a permenant employee to help them out in the first few months and work on the same projects and shadow them. That was a good way to start off.
Depends on the phase of projects but I found that I was quite busy some weeks and not so busy others, however as the projects progressed to implementation I would find myself more busy but in a good way, my days passed quickly and it felt very dynamic.
I got a lot of responsibility early on as within a couple of months of starting the placement I was asked to be a Project Manager for a project to design a prototype of a mobile app. I found that there was no need for someone to check my performance because I was communicating to the business and completing work, but they trusted me enough to not be constatly monitored
I believe that what I have learned will help me with furthering my career and my experience with project management will help out with my degree. Understanding how the business works and the applications of technology withing the business world will help me have perspective on my future studies,
The Company
I found that my colleagues are very lovely and are always up for a joke. It was a very friendly atmosphere and everyone was very supportive. Any ideas or questions that I put forward there was always someone to help out.
For me the placement was very well organised, we were provided with training to begin with, shown around the office, introduced to our buddies who helped to start us off with projects and work. As the department has had placements before, they have a lot of experience in it and knew how to make us feel welcome.
We were provided with 2 days of Requirements Management training and online required learning 2 times during the year. There was a online library of training courses available if requested as well. A lot of project specific training happens on every project which was also very useful.
