The Role
For me this year has been my best university experience so far. By being able to apply what I have learnt in the real world has been priceless. The experience has by no way been a walk in the park, but I have demonstrated and gained a reputation for being a hard worker that takes pride in their work. I don't really want to go back to studying as I enjoy the feeling of full time work so much now.
The team I work in is very central within the business so we are regularly dealing with multiple departments. As a team we have a laugh both insight and out of the office and are always there to support each other. Due to working within a high pressure environment, we understand each other very well, and know how to motivate each other, and how we work best as a team.
I am very close with my line manager, I am fortunate she takes my development very seriously. She set my objectives in the format of a full time employee, not an undergraduate, as she understood what motivates me and my capabilities from day 1. I have been able to speak to my line manager regarding future opportunities, and she has provided me with honest feedback that is always given with my best interests at heart.
I am flat out, everyday there is a new and exciting challenge, but it is a case of work hard and play hard. I enjoy my job so I do not mind the hours and I chose to stay and get involved to the level I do. I actively ask to be pushed so the work I receive and complete is down to the reputation I have gained over the year .
I have been given a significant amount of responsibility, from early in the placement my line manager identified my strengths and how I would benefit the team. I am a very organised individual with good people skills, so I have been entrusted to deliver briefings to senior staff, agencies and customers alike on my own. I have also been responsible for managing budgets and overseeing processes, and furthermore reviewing these processes to check their efficiency.
Without a shadow of a doubt, this placement has made me more employable, I now understand what it takes to succeed in an international corporation and I have goals on what I want to achieve in the future. It has also made me appreciate the difference between a lecture hall and real life. So many things we learn at university are not used any more, but there are so many opportunities to learn on the job. The most important skills I have developed this year are definitely ambiguity, strategy and reflection.
