The Role
I really enjoyed my placement year, at first it was hard to adapt to working 9.00-5.30 5 days a week as any normal uni student knows. But it was easy to adapt to a workplace with a friendly culture.
I felt extremely valued by my colleagues, being part of a 3 man team has its benefits and one of these is definitely feeling valued - I felt like everything I did had a real impact and my opinion was valued highly within the team.
I was given excellent support by my team and some members even went out their way to help me with things outside of work. I had monthly meetings with my manager where we would discuss my development and anything I wished to talk about.
I was extremely busy some weeks whereas other weeks were quieter as i would imagine any normal job is like. I had plenty of time to work on my placement portfolio but at the same time depending on circumstance I would be working hard to meet deadlines
I was given a great deal of responsibility and felt like my work had a real impact on the business, I was given the opportunity to take on more and more responsibility as the year went on and as i became more confident.
The skills and experience I have learnt firstly will look excellent on my CV and stands out more than anything I have previously done. I will take everything I have learnt with me and will have plenty of talking points in future interviews. MY year with Barratt Homes has really given me the work ethic to succeed in my final year of university.
The Company
The atmosphere in the office was friendly, everyone was willing to help and I was treated like a work colleague as opposed to the young placement student. I felt like a part of the team and made good friends I will still speak to past my placement.
I think the work placement was set up well, I was given the opportunity to do rotations in different departments within the business and there were quarterly undergraduate days where you would meet up with the other placement students which was great to share experiences.
I feel like I had a great deal of training and development and I'm so thankful for everything Barratt have given me. I particularly enjoyed the opportunity to attend external training like Photoshop courses.

There is a graduate scheme which undergraduates are fast-tracked onto should they wish so. In terms of marketing the opportunities are limited (within the grad scheme). However saying this, during my time, my marketing executive was promoted to Marketing manager at another division and a previous marketing undergraduate from the same university as me got the marketing executive role at my division.
The Culture
There was a good social scene when we were together however I would have enjoyed more of these days as I was the only placement student at my division so wasn't really amongst other placement students that often.
The cost of living was normal for me as I lived at home, your standard East Midlands prices for socializing.
The nighlife wasn't really a thing I partook in in terms of work as there wasn't many young people around. I spent time meeting up with uni friends in different cities if I wanted to go on a night out.
There wasn't a great deal of opportunity in this area. Sometimes a couple of the men from the office would arrange football matches after work but other than this not a lot.
