The Role
It was generally very enjoyable, though it took a few weeks before I had any real work to do. As a result it felt like some of my time was a bit wasted and I could have been more productive if I had started sooner.
I was asked to attend the team briefings and take part in a peer review of documentation, and I felt quite welcomed to be there.
I felt that I could very easily get help from the other staff as and when I needed it.
While I was a bit short of things to do at the start, once I had the work to get on with, it had enough scope that I could work continously on it and easily enough work solidly through the day.
I would say I had a reasonable amount of responsibility given my position, in essentially being left to develop the frontend on my own.
I did experiance some new software/technologies and have learned things which will be useful, but at the same time a fair amount of what I did was using concepts that I already knew.
The Company
Everyone in the department was generally very friendly and talkitive, it felt relaxed since you were free to get up and go and take a break. People also bring in cake/biscuits/etc. on their birthdays which helps to create a positive atmosphere.
It was generally well done, though the delay in getting work at the start could probably have been avoided to some degree, though it depends partly on what work is needed at a given time.
I was given security and health and safety courses, but there wasn't much else specifically. In a longer placement/employment, there are quite a lot of training courses available though.
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Sports and Social Club
Subsidised/Company Gym
Company Parties/Events
I have enjoyed working here, and the graduate scheme appears to be very good.
The Culture
There was definitely a good mix and plenty of opportunities to get involved in.
I would say that it is quite reasonable given that it is relatively close to London, but at the same time more expensive than I am used to.
Stevenage has quite a few pubs/clubs/places to eat, and a cinema and bowling alley so there is a fairly reasonable selection.
There are a number of Sports and Social clubs so I would say that there are plenty of opportunities available if you want to try them.
