The Role
I have thoroughly enjoyed my year at IBM. The placement scheme at IBM is well organised with a wide range of support provided to every placement student. I really enjoyed the fact that IBM encouraged placement students to socialise with each other and the company set up many events to ensure that each placement student made strong relationships with eahc other. In my role I have really enjoyed the work that I carried out I had a great level of independence and responsibility which at first was daunting but I have ended up enjoying and it has taught me a wide range of skills.
My team is made up of around 10 people which is relatively small compared to other teams within IBM. I felt extremely valued by the team and was given various tasks and responsibility throughout the year. The team were always happy to help and answer any questions that I had and were extremely understanding of my abilities at the beginning of the year.
IBM is fatnastic at giving support and guidance. In every aspect of the placement year there has been someone that is happy to help and answer questions. Each placement student is given an EPM (Early Professional Manager) that is there to guide you on your placement year. IBM strongly support shadowing and everyone I contacted throughout the year to shadow or chat about their role was happy to take time out of their day to help me.
Some days there wasn't much to do, at the start of the year I found this a struggle as I wasn't confident enough to ask people for work etc. However with my spare capacity by the end of the year I have created various new roles for myself and helped out other teams on certain aspects of their work which has given me a great insight into the company.
I have a lot of tasks that I am responsible for. However, I am not left alone to do it I can easily ask a member of my team for help and for them to check my work.
The skills I have learnt at IBM will definitely be used throughout my career. I have learnt to be organised, how to work in a team, the importance of attntion to detail and the ins and outs of a large global business like IBM.
The Company
I sat near lots of placement students as IBM encourage placement students to socialise. This meant that the office was very fun at times and we all get along well. Sometimes the office was quiet with lots of people working from home but the placement students stuck together.
The whole placement has been really well organised with a whole team dedicated to helping placement students. Throughout the year various events were set up to educate the placement students on the wider IBM and the IBM graduate scheme.
IBM really encourage shadowing and learning about the wider IBM. Throughout the year I have shadowed various people and learnt about other areas of the business

The grad scheme at IBM is something that I am very interested in and would like to come back adter Universtiy. The places for the grad scheme are limited and change every year so it is not guaranteed that I will get a place.
The Culture
I have made many freinds at IBM and was lucky to be based in Southbank where over 100 placement students are based. Drinks and a night out on Thursday are encouraged every week.
Expensive but it was in central London. I was lucky enough to live at home with my parents as I only live 20 minutes away from the office.
Very good, again being in central London the possibilities of going out are endless.
There was an IBM netball team and football team. I was also part of a women in tech group within IBM.
