    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • One of the things that made work interesting was the opportunity to rotate between two different divisions of banking. Senior people were willing to part with their knowledge and took time to explain things to juniors. The work structure is flat and many social events were organized for the interns.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • My colleagues knew when to give praise whenever it is due. People are very encouraging and motivate you to take up new challenges and learn as much as you can.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • During my first rotation, my supervisor would take time out to teach me short lessons on market making, the behaviour of stocks, lessons on investor relations, the creation of the value chain in the markets side etc. Besides that, there were also weekly lunch and learn sessions where full-time analysts would sit at lunch with us and give us technical/ division-specific lessons in investment banking.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • There was sometimes periods of time when there was no work for me although I asked so I found that to be quite inefficient.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I am very happy with my first rotation but wished for more from my second rotation.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Excel and Powerpoint skills and all the formatting tips learnt would prove useful in the future.

    3/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Senior and junior people mingled freely and there was not too much hierarchy going on.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • HR did an amazing job making our internship interesting. There were a lot of opportunities to mingle with senior people because HR arranged a lot of drinks receptions with HR.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • We were trained on Merger Market, Bloomber, Perfect Information, Factiva, Factset etc. There was also a full training week on general skills and specific technicalities which I found to be very useful.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Company Car

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • I go out on weekends with other interns and occassionally join in drinks/socials etc and have made many good friends.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Liverpool Street is not a very cheap place to eat out at.

    2/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • There are a few bars and pubs nearby but for real excitement, most people would go to Soho/Piccadilly Circus/Leicester Squre

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • We participated in the Prince's Trust Challenge, which gave us the opportunity to raise funds outside of work. Also, sports events were organized for us throughout the internship.
