    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • It was very interesting as I leaned a great deal regarding computer programming. However I was placed in a team which only did software development, therefore I could not contribute as much as I would have liked due to my lack of programming skills.

    3/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Due to my lack of programming skills caused by my engineering background, I could not bring a lot to the team. However, they did their best to include me in everything they did.

    3/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My manager was very supportive and helpful. He set up weekly meetings to make sure I always had a task at hand. He listened to my suggestions and put them in practice when they were good.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • It was my responsibility to manage my work work and to find the balance between the desk work and the app project, as well as any other events organised by RBS.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Very few, in part due to my lack of programming knowledge but also due to the fact that 9 weeks is a too short period to fully integrate a team.

    2/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I now have good Java programming skills, better project management skills, and improved communication and presentation skills.

    5/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Everyone, both in and out of the team, was friendly and helpful. In addition, bi monthly drinks were organised, which was good to network and get to know everyone.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • RBS did an excellent job setting us up. The events they organised were always helpful, interactive, and fun.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • there was one week of training at the start of the internship, which is already 10% of the internship. The grad programme offers 2 months, which I think is excellent.

    3/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Company Parties/Events

    2/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I'm not sure yet, though if I get offered a place on the graduate programme I will most definitely accept.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Many events were organised by both RBS and the interns themselves. the android app project was a great way to force us to spend time with each other.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • very high, as always if you want to live less than 30 minutes from the city.

    1/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Not bad, although I don't fancy the shoreditch/old street area.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • No, as summer is generally quiet. but I'm sure it is different during the year.
