The Role
I really enjoyed the year, but some of the jobs were a bit repetitive and dull. The work in general was varied and focused to the aim of the project. The lab work was enjoyable and different to the kind of work done at university. My colleagues were easy to get along with and helped make the placement more enjoyable.
I felt appreciated by the team and my contributions were valued and implemented. I developed several techniques and methods that were then implemented into the project and will be used for the final product. I received recognition and reward for my work from various colleagues which was greatly appreciated. Over the year I built up knowledge which colleagues utilised.
My supervisor supported me throughout the year and ensured I was working to the best of my ability.
Initially the work load was good with there being enough to occupy me throughout the day. During the latter part of the placement the work load dropped off and I often did not have enough work to fill up the whole day. I was able to work on my university report during these times, but I would have rather done work towards the projects I was assigned to.
I was given a good amount of responsibility during my placement year. The work I did was fully utilised in the projects I was assigned to with some work being used in patents and the final product. I developed a variety of techniques and methods which informed decisions made about various aspects of the project. I was able to create and carry out my own experiments.
There was little connection between my university work and my placement work and neither contributed much to the other. As this placement was my first job the experience has been highly valuable to me and I am sure will be utilised after university. Time management skills will be useful. The actual practical skills developed may be useful in similar environments.
The Company
The office atmosphere was very good. Everyone was friendly and approachable and all were interested in the work I and others were doing. Cake Friday was a nice way to end the week and there were some activities and meals throughout the year which were enjoyable. There was a Christmas party and meal.
The placement year was well set up and everything was communicated clearly and I never felt like I needed more information. A few of the scheduled events were rearranged and the webinars at the start of the year weren't the best in terms of organisation. I was given the information I needed at the start of the placement in a timely manner.
I had almost all of the same training opportunities as full employees at 3M. There was an emerging talent programme which had some interesting opportunities attached to it such as working with a local school. I completed a delivering impactful presentations course which helped improve my confidence with public speaking. I also underwent training on some of the products made by 3M.
Flexi Time
Company Parties/Events
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
If I were to apply to 3M in future there ware graduate opportunities and, with further study, the option of applying for a lab position.
The Culture
The level of interaction with students and colleagues was suitable for me.
The cost of living in the area was reasonable.
There was very little nightlife available, but I was not looking for that kind of thing when looking for places to live.
I completed STEM Ambassador training arranged through 3M and participated in 2 events with 3M and 2 additional events outside of the company.
